Summary
In the European Cistercian Community.
The Participation of the Cistercians
from the Historical Polish Lands
in the General Chapters in Citeaux (i2lh-i8th c.)
The Cistercian General Chapter was not only a pioneering institution in the history of the Church, but also the first international collegiate body centring around competences of legislative, judicial and executive powers, whose sphere of influence spread over all the countries of Western Christianity.
From the second decade of the 12th century to the close of the 18th century, initially annually, and since the 16th century with ever larger intervals, the Cistercians representing different European nationalities assembled in the meetings of the General Chapter in Citeaux, in Burgundy, the birthplace of the Cistercian Order. In accordance with the intention of the founders of the order expressed in the constitution Carta Caritatis, the purpose of these meetings was the care for salvation and cultivation of love and peace bonds among the White Monks, hence the integration of the Cistercian communities comprising the congregation, and later the order with specified observance and organizational structure. The Chapter led the development of the order and guarded the unity of the monastic customs, carried out a permanent reform of abbeys and made decisions concerning the role of the Cistercians in
553
the Church. In 1215 the Fourth Council of the Lateran decreed that the Cistercian-style General Chapter has to be introduced by all the congregations and orders of monks and regular canons, which may testify that the said institution enjoyed respect and fulfilled its role well.
The Cistercian General Chapter held absolute power in the truly international order, which comprised orders from the Atlantic Ocean to Livonia, from Scandinavia to the Near East. No less impressive than its sphere of influence is the period of its functioning. It guarded the unity of the Cistercian order for almost seven hundred years, which places it among the longest-lasting European institutions. With mixed results it confronted the challenges of each epoch. Crises and reforms of the Church exerted influence on the structure of the Cistercian order and regularity of the proceedings of the Chapter. Wars and epidemics hindered travelling to Citeaux. The politics of the rulers limited supranational competences of the Chapter and menaced schisms in the order. Despite all these external threats, changing attitudes of the communities and monks themselves, as well as the conflicts inside the order, the Cistercian General Chapter attempted to handle the role assigned by the authors of the constitution Carta Caritatis and redefined in the papal bulls.
The General Chapter has so far been researched from the perspective of the normative texts: constitution Carta Caritatis, Cistercian legislation known from codifications and annual statutes and papal bulls (Parvus forts of 1265, Fulgens sicut Stella Matutina of 1335 and In suprema of 1666). The studies undertaken on this basis concentrated on the organization and legal aspects of the activities of the General Chapter. A pioneering role in this field was belonged to Gregor Müller who prepared - over several decades before the edition of the statutes by J.-M. Caniveza was published - over sixty studies referring to various aspects of the functioning of the Cistercian Chapter in the Middle Ages and Modem Times published by "Cis ter denser Chronik" in the years 1900-1908 (Studien über das Generalkapitel (I-LXI)). A comparative study devoted to the mediaeval General Chapters of different orders, including the Cistercian one, was issued in 1936 by Jacques Hourlier (Le chapitre général jusqu'au moment du Grand Schisme. Origines, développement, étude juridique). Further extension of knowledge about the General Chapter was possible owing to the source studies lasting from the 1940s until now, which resulted in the editions of the Cistercian normative texts.

Summary
Greatest merit in this field belongs to: Joseph-Marie Canivez (an editor of the statutes of the Chapter from 12th to 18th centuries); Joseph Turk and Auguste Trilhe (discoverers of different editions of Carta Caritatis), Colomban Bock and his followers - Jean-Alexandre Lefèvre i Bernard Lucet (authors of the editions and studies of the i3th-century codifications of the order legislation), and most recently Chrysogonus Waddell (an editor of Narrative and Legislative Texts from Early Citeaux and Twelfth-Century Statutes from the Cistercian General Chapter). As a result of their work we are able to thoroughly analyze the evolution of the organization of the Cistercian order and its institutions, including the General Chapter. The aforementioned topic was as well explored during the World War II by Jean-Berthold Mahn (L'Ordre cistercien et son gouvernement des origines au milieu du XIIIe siècle (1098-1265)).
Most recently (2002) Florent Cygler (Das Generalkapitel im hohen Mittelalter: Cistercienser, Prämonstratenser, Kartäuser und Cluniazenser) published a comparative study into the General Chapters of different orders. However, it needs to be emphasized that the said studies, apart from articles by Müller (prepared on more modest sources than we know today), close in the Middle Ages, or more specifically, in the mid-i4th century, when the last codification of the Cistercian law comes from. No monograph presenting the Cistercian General Chapter in the whole period of its functioning has been prepared so far. Exceptions are studies of Louis J. Lekai focused on the selected Chapters of the modem era and their reforms. Valuable remarks on the functioning of the Chapter until the 18th century were made by Roger de Ganck in the article on the competences of the abbot of Citeaux. To sum up, we may state that despite the progress in the research, the history of the General Chapter, specifically from the 14th century, still deserves full and systematic studies.
The General Chapter assembled the Cistercians from different parts of Western Christianity. The impact of the Chapter depended upon the attendance in their proceedings and the authority it enjoyed among Cistercian communities, which was resultant upon its efficiency in managing the monastic affairs. In historiography no serious attempt has been made to address the question of how the Cistercian Chapter functioned, on what the participation in its session depended, and whether the Cistercians, especially those from distant countries, travelled to Citeaux, and if yes - what the experiences and outcomes of their travels were. Such a state of affairs is due to the most commonly

adopted research perspective; historians focus on the history of the individual abbeys in the context of their local community. The issue of the participation in the General Chapter arises only at the margin of a few monographs of individual monasteries or of a particular country. As a separate problem it attracted the attention of just a few researchers, Peter King analyzed the attendance in the i4th-century Chapters on the basis of two lists of definitors of the years 1356 and 1357. Recently some studies concerning travels of the abbots from the selected countries to the Chapter have been published. The specificity of the travels of the Bavarian and Frankish abbots to Cîteauxin the modem era were discussed by Klaus Wollenberg. Katerina Charvàtovâ, in turn, focused on the expeditions of the abbots from Bohemia and Moravia to the General Chapters from the 12th to the close of the 14th centuries. Some issues relating to the participation of the abbots from Poland in the meetings of the General Chapter until the close of the 13th century and journeys of the Cistercians from Silesia to Citeaux in 1699 and 1768 were presented in my articles.
The aim of the presented study is to examine the problem of participation of the Cistercians from the historical Polish lands in the whole period of the existence of the General Chapter (i2th-i8th). The chosen topic can be justified for at least several reasons. The abbots' determination of the attendance of the Cistercians from the Polish lands in the meetings of the General Chapter in Citeaux - to a certain extent - enables us to verify the role the General Chapter played, or more specifically, to check whether the said meetings were representative for the whole order and contributed to the integration of the Cistercian communities. The Cistercians from the monasteries in the Polish lands, which were situated peripherally in relation to Citeaux, constitute a good starting point. The recognition to what extent they were engaged in the activities of the General Chapter might be helpful in better understanding and evaluation of the functioning of the Cistercian order. The establishment of when and how often Cistercians from Polish land took part in the General Chapter extends our knowledge of the contacts of the Cistercians from the lands situated to the east of the Oder River with the culture and inhabitants of the countries they met on the way to Cîteaux. This might lead to important clues for the future research into the culture of the Cistercian abbeys in the Polish lands and its influence on the reality of the time. The presented conclusions might

contribute as a part answer to a key question in Polish historiography about the ways of transmission of ideas, innovations and patterns from the culture of the West to the lands of the so-called Younger Europe.
In my discussion I analyzed all the Cistercian male abbeys founded in the Polish state (altogether twenty-seven communities founded in Lesser Poland, Greater Poland, Silesia, Pomerania and Pommerelia, Ku-jawy, Neumark and the lands of the old Duchy of Lithuania - in today's Belarus). The Cistercian participation in the General Chapter was examined comprehensively, i.e. not with reference to individual monasteries. This approach was dictated by the incomplete source material, but also was resultant upon a developed practice of Chapter-attendance and the politics of the Chapter, whose decisions often concerned the whole community of the said abbeys. In the 15th century, when an attempt was made to appoint the monastic provinces, the boundaries of the Gniezno metropolis - not the state - was proposed. In the 17th and 18th centuries the abbeys within my interest functioned in two vicariates: Polish and Silesian. I decided to include these two provinces because there is more source material referring to the Silesian abbeys, and as it enabled me to conduct comparative studies. I selected a maximal chronological span - from the rise of the first Cistercian foundations in the Polish lands in the mid-i2th century to the last General Chapter in 1786. The so-called "long duration" perspective appeared to be the most justified, as it contains all the changes and evolutions in the contacts of the abbeys with the Chapter. Besides it was due to the fact that richer and more varied source material was preserved from the modem era, shedding light on matters either passed over in silence or hardly examined in the mediaeval sources.
In my research I have used normative texts - the constitution of the order, statutes of the General Chapter, codifications of the Cistercian legislation, papal bulls; financial sources - monastic registers of contributions of the years 1337-1347, 1403-1424, 1499-1516 and receipts of payments of the contributions issued by the Polish monasteries of the years 1455-1496; monastic historiographic sources - chronicles, annals, catalogues of abbots; modem treaties on the government in the Cistercian order; Polish and Silesian acts of the provincial chapters of the modem era, at which delegates for the General Chapter were chosen; abbots' correspondence and reports from journeys to Citeaux of the Polish (1738) and Silesian (of the years 1699 and 1768) delegates.

Incomplete information concerning the contacts with the General Chapters was found in the diplomatic materials. The bibliographical research encompassed state and church archives as well as libraries, in which post-Cistercian legacy is stored, in the country (Wroclaw, Krakow, Poznan, Gdansk, Pelplino, Warszawa, Sandomierz, Wlodawek) and abroad (Dijon, Troyes, Paris, Prague and Berlin). Best described in the source material appear to be the contacts of the abbeys from Silesia and Gdansk Pomerania.
The greatest difficulty in the study on the said topic lay in the analysis of the source material. The monastic archives from Cîteaux, kept at present in the departmental archives in Dijon, were hardly preserved. As reference to the Middle Ages are mostly indirect due to only selectively preserved statutes, registers and receipts of the payments of the monastic contributions - little can be said about the contacts between the monasteries and the Chapter. A complete corpus of the statutes of the Cistercian General Chapter is not known as well. Copies of the oldest series of the annual statutes refer to the year 1180. The i4th-century statutes were preserved to a lesser extent. It was not until the modem era that the lists of the officials of the Chapter, i.e. ordinationes, or the lists of the present abbots, survived, which provide the explicit evidence of who participated in the meetings of the Chapter. The presence of the monks in the role of the abbots' companions or representatives of the abbeys was not registered, therefore the information about them is somewhat accidental and incomplete. The accounts from the modem period concerning the journeys to Cîteaux give us a hint about experiences and impressions of the participants of the General Chapter.
The following study is structured according to the problem analysis and consists of seven chapters focusing on the following topics: functioning of the General Chapter from the 12th to 18th centuries (I); rules of participation and general attendance during the meetings of the Chapter (II, IV); participation of the Cistercians from the Polish lands in the Chapters (III, V); journeys (VI), as well as the stay in Cîteaux during the General Chapter (VII).
In the first chapter, on the basis of literature and normative sources I depicted the evolution of the organization, competences and role of the General Chapter in the Cistercian order from the 12th to 18th centuries. The Chapter was established as an annual assembly of all the Cistercian abbots, when only the abbey in Cîteaux and its direct

affiliates situated in Burgundy and Champagne belonged to the Cistercian congregation. Initially, Chapters were the meetings that assembled those who knew each other well. In the period of only three decades due to a rapid development of the Cistercian order those private meetings transformed into international assemblies, in which even a few hundred people could participate. At least to the 1260s the General Chapter functioned effectively and enjoyed high prestige, while the Cistercian order was still developing. However, from the 14th century the history of the Cistercian General Chapter reflected a somewhat turbulent nature. Due to unfavourable external circumstances (Hundred Years' War, Black Death, Great Schism, Reformation, religious wars), the introduction of the appointment of the abbot by a ruler, the crisis of unity and diminishing involvement of the abbots in the monastic matters or due to economic factors, fewer abbots attended the Chapters. The crisis of the Chapter contributed to the increase of the role of the abbot of Citeaux, who became the abbot general and from 1487 with pope's consent exercised the power of the General Chapter between its meetings. In the i6th-century sessions of the Chapter usually only several dozen of abbots participated, in some just over a dozen, primarily the French ones.
A sign of deepening crisis was the abandoning of regular and annual organization of the Chapter in the 16th century. The attempts to introduce reforms, for instance the cyclical nature of meetings, made during the General Chapter in 1601 and by pope Alexander VII in 1666 produced merely short-term results. Moreover, internal conflicts within the Cistercian order in the 17th and 18th centuries had a negative influence on the effectiveness of the works of the Chapter as well as its prestige. In the 1630s a dangerous precedent of an appeal from a decision of the Chapter to persons outside the order (among others to the tribunal in Dijon and king of France) was established, which de facto led the Cistercian order to the loss of sovereignty. In the 18th century only six General Chapters were organized, intervals between subsequent assemblies amounted to even several decades (1700-1737,1739-1764). The abbots of Citeaux refrained from convening the Chapters for it was more advantageous for them to individually control the order than to face the opposition during the sessions of the Chapter. Last Cistercian General Chapters were held in compliance with the French state commission for religious congregations (Commission des Réguliers).

Subsequent four chapters concern the main issue, i.e. the participation of the Cistercian monks from the Polish lands in the General Chapters- Chapter II and III concentrate on the period from the 12th to 14th centuries, when the attendance in the Chapter was compulsory for every abbot. Year 1409 was a turning point - after thirty years of interruption the General Chapter in Cîteaux was again organised for the whole order. Informative value of the source material significantly determined a degree of definiteness and specificity of the conclusions reached. In Chapter II requirements of the participation in the Chapters were thoroughly reviewed, since a detailed comparison of the rules formulated in the statutes and Cistercian codifications has not yet been made. As far as possible I tried to characterize the total attendance in the Chapters and identify factors which shaped it
Chapter III comprises the analysis of the attendance of the Cistercians from the Polish lands in the General Chapters until the close of the 16th century. Statutes from the 1180s concern individual abbeys and may constitute a starting point for the reflection on the contacts of the Cistercians from the Polish lands with Cîteaux. In the years 1190-1299 their matters were discussed during fifty-eight General Chapters, which resulted in approximately one hundred statutes. The Cistercian participation was analyzed on the basis of the contexts in which they and their monasteries appeared in the statutes of the Chapter. However, only rarely it is possible to firmly state which abbot participated in the Chapter. It seems that Cistercians from Poland participated in
c. seventy General Chapters. In the preserved statutes information on absences of the abbots from the Polish lands is relatively scarce. There is no reprimands for their notorious absences. In turn, they were addressed to the Irish, Spanish, Hungarian and Scandinavian abbots. No abbot from the Polish lands was to be punished with deposition, which was the most severe penalty. In sum, it might be stated that in the years 1190-1299 the Cistercians from the Polish lands regularly participated in the General Chapters in Cîteaux, most probably with the same frequency that the Cistercians from Danish abbeys (the research conducted by Brian P. McGuire) or Bohemia and Moravian ones (the research by Katerina Chârvâtova).
The participation of the Cistercians from the Polish lands in the General Chapters in the subsequent century escapes from detailed description and evaluation owing to a shortage of source material.

Summary
Journeys of the Cistercians from the Gniezno metropolis to Citeaux can be confirmed by the local copies of the statutes of the Chapters from the years 1300-1337 and monastic registers of the payments of the contributions from the years 1337-1347. Although the source material does not allow to clearly state who participated in the mediaeval General Chapters, regularity of the contacts of the Cistercians from the Polish lands with the Chapter until 1340s raises no doubts. What it looked like in the decades to come is difficult to state. Taking into consideration especially unfavourable external circumstances - Hundred Years' War, Black Death, Great Schism - it is obvious that in the 14th century, especially in its second half, contacts of the Cistercians with the General Chapter, not only from the Polish lands, were limited.
Chapters IV and V refer to years 1409-1786, when it became a practice - initially accepted, later legalized - to send representatives of the abbeys, not only abbots but also monks, to the meetings of the General Chapter. A beginning of the changes might be set at the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, when a reorganisation of the structure of the order into territorial provinces, called vicariates, began. In Chapter IV I presented the evolution of the requirements of the General Chapter concerning the participation in its assemblies. With reference to the preserved lists of the officials (ordinationes) of the Chapter, the general attendance in the proceedings was characterised. In the General Chapters for which the available data come from only several dozen of abbots participated. From the sources of the monastic provenance it emerges that monasteries were as well represented by monks who handed over contributions and presented petitions from the abbeys they represented. For the period from the 16th to 18th centuries it is possible to compare the attendance of the abbots from different countries. Insofar as in the 16th century the abbots from the Polish lands travelled to Citeaux most probably only several times, in the 17th and 18th centuries when nineteen General Chapters were summoned, delegates from the Polish abbeys participated thirteen times in the assemblies in Citeaux, Silesian abbots - ten times (including seven times after 1651 when an independent Silesian vicariate was established). When it comes to the foreign abbeys, abbots from Upper German congregation, Aragon and Savoy, Low German countries and Netherlands attended the Chapter in Citeaux most often (eighteen times, sixteen times, fifteen times, and fourteen times respectively). Abbots from Austria, as well as from Bohemia, Moravia

and Lusatia (comprising one vicariate) participated in the Chapter less often for eight times, while from Italian countries - seven times. Bearing in mind the considerable distance from Cîteaux, wars and bad financial situation of the monasteries in Poland and Silesia, it seems that the attendance of Polish and Silesian abbots when compared to the attendance of the abbots from other countries look satisfactorily. Nonetheless, it has to be noted that the presented image of the relations between the Cistercians from Poland and Silesia with the General Chapter remains distorted due to the contacts maintained via monks, whose participation was not registered. The Silesian monasteries always chose abbots as their delegates for the General Chapter. In turn, the Polish abbeys were represented by monastic officials of higher rank in the years 1605, 1609, 1613, 1651,1672.
Chapter V presents the analysis of the Cistercian attendance from the historical Polish lands in the General Chapters from the 15th to 18th centuries. In the years 1409-1518 matters of the Gniezno metropolis were discussed during sixty-three Chapters. A number of statutes concerning the monasteries from particular regions was roughly proportional to their number. The greatest group of statutes comes from 1440s, 1460s and 1480s. In the years 1410-1424, 1455-1496, 1500-1516 monastic contributions were paid relatively regularly, which may confirm the participation of the Cistercians from these lands in the Chapters. In fact, there is almost no source material concerning their participation in the Chapters since 1518 to the close of the 16th century. We may assume that owing to unfavourable external circumstances (religious wars) and a difficult situation of the monasteries journeys to Cîteaux were limited. However, thanks to the Chronicle of Pelplin it might be assumed that some abbots sent their delegates to Cîteaux to discuss serious matters. Contacts with the General Chapter were resumed as a result of reforms and monastic visits, which were the consequence of the adoption of the guidelines drawn up by the Council of Trent by the abbots general of the order. In the 17th and 18th centuries Cistercians from Poland and Silesia were generally represented in Cîteaux. The reasons for their absence, in turn, should be deemed convincing. Silesian abbots from Lubi^z, Henrykôw, Rudy and Krzeszow travelled to Cîteaux even on several occasions. Representatives from the abbeys in Pommerelia and Greater Poland attended the Chapter quite frequently (five times from Oliwa, two times from Pelplin, three times from Bledzew, two

times from L^d and Obra, and once from Koronowo and Paradyz). Cistercians from the monasteries in Lesser Poland participated in the Chapter only in 1601 - the abbot of W^chock and in 1768 - the abbot of Szczyrzyc.
In Chapter VII discussed preparations and itinerary of the journeys to Citeaux and made an attempt to assess their significance. For the Middle Ages there is no other records on this issue than the normative texts which contain the rules regarding the companions in the journeys and hospitality offered to those travelling to the General Chapter. It was not until the accounts from the journeys from the modem period that it is possible to reconstruct a route to Citeaux and illustrate their experiences and perception of the whole journey. Before the Reformation Cistercians most probably chose the shortest route through the German countries and stayed for a night in the Cistercian properties. More can be said about the route chosen by the Silesian Cistercians in the 17th and 18th centuries. Their route led through Bohemia, Bavaria, Swabia, and later through Switzerland or Baden-Württemberg, Alsace to Burgundy. They visited Prague, Nuremberg, Regensburg, Augsburg, Munich, Ulm, Strasbourg, Basel, Belfort, Colmar and Dijon. Less is known about the route Polish delegates followed. In 1783 they travelled through Duchy of Pomerania, Saxony, Thuringia, Hesse, Alsace, Lorraine and Burgundy, visiting Dresden, Leipzig, Erfurt, Frankfurt, Strasburg, Belfort, Colmar and Dijon. Most probably the sea-lane was used as well from Gdansk to one of the German or Dutch ports and further by land.
Experiences from the Cistercian travels heading for the General Chapter are known only from singular accounts from the modem period. Although it might be risky to draw general conclusions from them, it seems obvious that travelling Cistercians could observe and compare the reality. Their notes concerning landscape, architecture, economy, meetings, conversations or stories bear evidence of their curiosity and pragmatic approach to the experienced reality. At least in the 18th century, granted that the travellers devoted some time and funding, they used them to visit most important cities, even if it meant longer routes. They visited magnates' and bishops' residences, libraries, museums and cabinets of curiosities, arsenals and manufactories, and, above all, churches. They stayed for longer in monasteries, yet not only in Cistercian ones, where they could learn about the conditions of

living of those communities. Undoubtedly, those journeys enhanced diffusion of information and deepening of the historical and political and surely economic knowledge of the visitors and the visited. The travellers brought home reliquaries and books, and probably other objects, but - what is even more important - skills and inspirations. A postulate for further research is to determine the scope of the reception of knowledge and patterns which the Cistercians could assimilate during those journeys.
Chapter VII is devoted to activities and experiences while the stay in Cîteaux during the sessions of the General Chapter. An effort was made to characterize the hospitality offered to travellers in Cîteaux, present the order of the day, analyse the evolution of the decision making procedure, role of the delegates from Poland and Silesia as the officials at the Chapter, as well as their spare time in Cîteaux. The aforementioned topics are better represented for the 17th and 18th centuries thanks to the accounts from the stay in Cîteaux dating from this period. The experience of the participants, quality of board and lodging and the possibility of getting acquainted with the abbey and community of Cîteaux, or other participants of the Chapter, depended on a material situation of the abbey in Cîteaux, length of stay and number of people assembled, so undoubtedly differed substantially with time.
Despite considerable distance, costs and dangers of the journeys, Cistercians from the abbeys founded in the Polish lands participated in the General Chapters in Cîteaux given the external circumstances and customs of the epoch. Cistercians from the Gniezno metropolis performed responsible functions in the Chapters, as can be confirmed by the documentation of the 17th and 18th centuries. During the journeys and stay in Cîteaux they could learn about their fellow brothers from abroad. Unquestionably, there was as well an immense cognitive advantage of travelling to Cîteaux. The analysis of the participation of the Cistercians from the historical Polish lands in the General Chapters leads to the conclusion that their travels had a great positive impact on diffusion of civilization processes. The study of various traces of the influence of the journeys of the grey monks to Cîteaux on the transfer of ideas within Europe should result in better understanding of the genesis of numerous economic, artistic and intellectual ventures undertaken in the Polish lands of the past centuries. |
