SUMMARY
THE TOWN OF VALJEVO, ORIGIN AND DEVELOPMENT
contributions to the urban history
from the first mentions until the 20th century
The town of Valjevo is situated in Serbia, 100 kilometres south
from Belgrade. Its name is probably derived from the possessive adjecti-
ve of the old personal name Valj, which is the Slavic term for several
Latin names: Valko, Vaili, Valius and Valentinus.
Valjevo is situated in the valley where the river Kolubara flows di-
viding the town into two parts. On the northern bank of the river, the
town spreads over the spacious valley, while the southern part is squee-
zed between the river and the hills. Today, when Valjevo consists of
60.000 citizens, it spreads itself both near and on the surrounding hills.
But, what was it like during the previous centuries?
Valjevo valley, with the river which flows through it, has from the
early times offered favourable conditions for the life of human commu-
nities, so that the traces of settlements as early as in the Neolithic period
were found. During the tumultuous past of the Balkan peninsula, Valje-
vo valley was a constituent part of the Roman Empire and Byzantium
and from the 12th century it became a part of the newly formed Serbian
state of the Nemanjic family. Archeological researches pointed out the
settling of this territory during all periods, but there are no historical so-
urces which could offer some more concrete information about those old
settlements. Valjevo itself was for first time mentioned in well-known
documents in 1393 as a long-lasting, active trade centre being a part of
Serbian medieval state. When it fell into hands of the Turks in 1459, Va-
ljevo also became a part of the Moslem Ottoman Empire and in the next
three and a half centuries it was an Oriental town. In the first half of the
19th century, through the battle of the Serbian people to gain autonomy,
Valjevo became a part of the principality Serbia.
At the time of its first mention, Valjevo was a Christian trade settle-
ment situated at the cross-roads of busy roads. It was visited by a great
number of merchants from Dubrovnik, as agents in the trade between
the Balkans and developed centres of the Mediterranean basin. With the
fall into Turkish hands, the settlement experienced great decline, but it
stayed mainly Christian for some time. According to the census of popu-
lation in 1528 there were 71 Christian and 27 Moslem households. But,
with the expanding of the Turkish Empire and moving of the border
further from the river Sava and thus further from Valjevo, old trade rou-

tes were again restored, which led to the repeated development of Valje-
vo, but this time it was followed by a fast Islamization. Already in 1560,
there were 293 Moslem and only 51 Christian households in it, while
one century later there were totally 870 mainly Moslem houses in Valje-
vo. Such development ought to have caused also the territorial expan-
ding of the settlement, as it was spreading at that time on both banks of
the river Kolubara. On the right bank there was carsija , the Oriental
craft-trade quarter, while on the left, more spacious side, there was the
residential-administrative part of the settlement.
At the end of the 17th century the borders between the Ottoman and
Austro-Hungarian Empire came back again to the river Sava, which cau-
sed that in all later wars Valjevo was on the routes of war breaches and
during the period 1719-1739, it became a part of the Austro-Hungarian
Empire. The permanent war danger unavoidably caused the decline of
the settlement. Two years after its return as a part of the Turkish state in
1741 there were 91 Moslem and 11 Christian houses and four decades
later there were 400 Moslem and 50 Christian houses placed on both
banks of the river Kolubara.
The beginning of the 19th century brought new changes. Through
battles from the First and Second Serbian Uprising (1804-1815), Serbia
gained limited autonomy and Valjevo again became a Christian settle-
ment. The Serbs came to the town, but in a rather smaller number than
the Turks who left it, so that there were only 160 houses in it. They were
now concentrated only on the right bank of the river Kolubara, in and
around craft-trade quarter, while the part of the settlement on the opposi-
te bank became deserted. However, the cramped space on the right bank
did not offer any perspective for rapid development which followed and
therefore in the middle of the fourth decade Valjevo again came to the
left bank of the river Kolubara. In order to prevent chaotic settling,
which would be an obstacle in the further development of the town, the
project of the further space development was made in 1855, which re-
presented the urban basis of the current wide city centre. This plan set
the bases for the further, faster development. During the second half of
19th century, the number of citizens increased very quickly, from 1.100
in 1826, over 1.600 in 1844 up to 7.000 in 1900. The increase in the
number of citizens was also accompanied by the spreading of the town,
planning of new streets, building of new facilities and the general mo-
dernization.
