CONCLUSION
Neither classic peoples nor latter educated ones had completely men-
tal pictures on the central areas of Balkan; only its maritime periphery
was familiar to them. For the centre itself, it was thought to have been
covered with impenetrable rainforest, and dressed up with huge and
high mountains. Such opinion was present among the experts until the
first half of the previous century. Antique geographs considered that
in the centre of the Balkan so terrible heights were rising, so that from
them all seas surrounding the Balkan could be seen. Macedonian king
Philip V had taken part personally in one expedition which climbed to
the peak of the highest Balkan mountain. From that place they could
see virtually the entire oecumene. This image was conditioned by two
assumptions.797
Greek mythological geography was knowledgeable about two At-
lases - one in the Southern Balkan, in Peloponnese, and the second
one in the Middle of Podunavlje. The function of these Atlases, which
were, later on, by the extension of geographic horizon, moved to the far
West toward the Atlantic and the pretended Atlântida were very simple:
they served as the pillar of the sky. This expression is read in the Vuks
Dictionary, from which we are finding out the Durmitor had the same
function. Besides the Durmitor, our people are telling that Rtanj and a
fairly unknown mountain, Smiljan,798 had the same function, as some
time in antiquity Etna in Sicilia had fulfilled that extremely responsible
duty. That duty consisted in the fact that all mountain peaks had sup-
ported the firmament, designed as it was made of stone or metal above
which a heavenly ocean had been suspended. Without that support,

heaven would be unleashed on earth and its inhabitants. Those heaven
pillars supports could be in the centre or in the periphery of oecumene:
in case they are in the centre, as the old Balkan Atlases and our Durmi-
tor, they must be unusually high since in their centre the firmament was
the farthest from the earth. Those others heaven pillars, usually one in
the East and the other in the West, may be lower since the firmament is
obviously proceeding to the earth. The image on the central pillar was
simpler, and presumably older. Namely, it could as per the ethnologists’
opinion, have become only analogy to the construction of nomadic tent,
which had in the middle its pillar. The same analogy served the creation
of the image on chains which are holding, which are familiar to the poet
of Iliad and the one of Luča Mikrokozma ֊ Nj egos.799
The second hypothesis is arising from the first one. The inhabitants
of those Atlases or Durmitor cannot be ordinary mortals, but only the
beings of higher ranks. For the mountain of Smiljan is said that saints
were living in it. The image as such was noted about fifty centuries ago
in Mesopotamia, where, as B. Hrozni is saying,800 was the belief that in
the far North there was a very high mountain where Gods were dwelling.
For Mediterranean Greeks, especially in mythical archaic era, the whole
Balkan with its mountains, was the far North, so that Thessaly Olymp
became a divine mountain and meeting place of gods. Even Aristotle
himself, besides his enormous education, believed in the existence of
some extremely high heaven pillar in the North, above which the Sun
spends the night and have a rest from the difficult journey, so therefore,
southern from that mountain, it was dark during the night. From that
there is a myth on Hyperborean, who lives northern from that mountain,
happy and delighted in the company of Apollo.801
All mentioned is telling us the Eastern from the Balkan, from that
mountainous giants, from the oldest times were taking part in the build-
ing of European mentality. Although the impacts from the Eastern part
must be taken into account, from the simple reason that Mesopotamian

testimonies were recorded earlier than the old Balkan, however we,
from the standpoint from the European, cannot in any way bypass, let
alone leap over Balkan heaven pillar which was set up in old times and

Greeks adopted, the most probably in the period of X-IX century
before Christ, Phoenician and consonant letter,803 and partly modified
it by adapting it to their voice characteristics. Greek contribution to the
development of alphabet letter was exceptional. The Old Greeks faced
with a major difficulty ֊ in case there are signs only for consonants, what
will happen with vowels (a, e, i),804 in Greek language not only is their
number as twice large but it may happen that two-three different vowels
are standing one by another. This problem should have been settled in
a way. Within Phoenician alphabet there were so called four „weak“
consonants for which in Greek language there were not analogy voices.
In order to adapt graphic system of writing to their language,805 Greeks
had overturned these „excessive“ graphic symbols into corresponding
vowels, and in that way they obtained alpha (=a),806 epsylon (=e),807 808 yota
(=l)8°8 ancj omicron (=0)809. Phoenician sign ,,vav“810 (Y) meant only
bilabial consonant ,,B“, and the Old Greeks made use of it to denote in
Greek language two different voices ֊ vowel ,,Y“811 and its consonants
bilabial variant ,,W“812. Semitic laryngeal voice Xetx was used in the
majority of Greek dialects to denote the second open e (=o)813.

At first Greek alphabet possessed twenty one letters (that is graph-
eme). As per the linguistic and graphologie analyses of all the oldest
inscriptions from VIII-VII century before Christ.814 Revolutionary char-
acter of the Greek alphabet was achieved pursuant to the some phonetic
alterations of the existent graphemes carried out (signs, letters), and by
introducing of new ones. Hence, the first alphabet in the world was the
first visual image of all phonetic elements of speech and fully met the
phonological principle „write as you speak and read as it is written“815.
