Summary
The National Museum of the History of Ukraine is a leading
establishment in the country. It started its activities as the City Museum of
Antiquities and Arts with the archeological exhibition in honor of the 11th
All-Russia archeological conference, held in Kyiv in August 1-20,1899.
The premises for the museum was constructed in Oleksandrivs’ka
Street (now ֊ Hrushevs’koho Street) after a special design by architects
W. Horodeckyi and P. Boitsov on funds collected by progressive
intellectuals of Kyiv.
The inauguration and consecration of the museum was held on
December 30,1904. Then it was named the Kyiv Museum of Art Industry
and Science named after the Emperor Nicholas Aleksandrovich.
Among the museum founders were famous Ukrainian scholars -
the archeologist, ethnographer and art critic, later member of All-
Ukraine Academy of Science and Aca demy of Science of the Ukrainian
SSR M. F. Biliashivs’kyi (the first director of the museum), the
archeologist V. V. Hvoika, he ethnographer D. M. Shcherbakivs’kyi,
and others.
The museum collection was formed of finds from archeological
excavations led not only by the museum founders, but also by noted
archeologists O. O. Bobryns’kyi, E. O. Znosko-Borovs’kyi, S. A. Mazaraki
and D. M. Ivanishev. Collections donated by I. A. Khainovs’kyi, F. F.
Kunderevych, V. Ye. Gize, V. B. Antonových, the Khanenkos and the
Tereschenkos families became the pride of the museum.
Museum functioned on means of patrons, and only in 1909 it received
the annual grand.
The museum’s importance as an ideological and enlightening
institution intensified in 1917-1919, with the emergence of the Ukrainian
national state. Nevertheless, numerous attempts to reorganize it into the
National museum failed.
In 1919, the museum was named the First State Museum, and in 1924
- the Taras Shevchenko All-Ukraine Museum of History.
After its reorganization in 1935 the museum was renamed the Taras
Shevchenko Central Historical Museum and was moved to the museum
town in the territory of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra.
With the beginning of the war of 1941-1945 its unique exhibits the
evacuated to Ufa.
In May 1944 the museum was relocated to Starokyivs’ka Hill into
the premises of the former arts school (built 1937, architect Yo. Karakis)
and recommenced its functioning as the State Republican Museum of
History.
In 1965, the museum was named the State Historical Museum of the
Ukrainian SSR.
In October 1991, the museum was one of the first Ukrainian cultural
institutions to receive the national status.
Now the museum stock numbers over 800,000 unique monuments of
history and culture. They represent the process of society’s evolution in the
territory of Ukraine from ancient times to the present. Its archeological
collection includes over 350,000 items and is known far away from
Ukraine’s borders. Among them, for example, are finds from Mizyns’ka
and Kyrylivs’ka sites of the Old Stone Age, Trypillia agricultural tribes,
and other cultures of the Copper and Bronze ages.
Of great interest are materials concerning Greek city-states on the
Northern Black Sea coast - Olbia, Pantikapaion, Chersonessos, and others.
Widely elucidated are the early Slavic period and history of Old Rus
state - Kyivan Rus.
The museum has numerous collections of the cold steel and firearms,
ethnography, numismatics, bonistics and faleristics, unique literary
editions, glass and chinaware.
Collections of painting, graphic arts and sculpture include more than
10,000 units. Of special value is the collection of works by Ukrainian jewelers.
Worthy of note are materials associated with the history of Cossacks, national
democratic and social revolutions, and state building in Ukraine.
Tire Museum of Historical Treasures of Ukraine, which is part of the
National Museum of the History of Ukraine, has an excellent collection
of masterpieces of universal importance, dating from the 6th century BC
to the 21st century.
Every year thousands of visitors attend the museum. The museum’s
exhibitions were held in the USA, Canada, France, Germany, Austria,
Finland, and other countries.
The collection of the National Museum of the History of Ukraine
makes possible to carry out significant research and educational work on
the history of Ukraine.
