Resume / Summary
On the fertile plain. (From the story of Csabaner Michal Zsilinszky)
Michal Zilinsky (Zsilinszky Mihály, 1838-1925) wrote and published lots of books and publications since mid 1860s. His research and results - professional and journalist texts - reflect many of noteworthy themes of historiography including culture-historical phenomena and problems of so called everydayness. He concentrated primarily on church history of Protestants in Hungary, on regional history of Békés and Csongmd counties, on history of council negotiations in the 17th and 18th century, on historical adaptation of life and work of significant personalities. He expressed his opinion on various problems of Hungarian history. Zilinsky earned out a big deal of meritorious work on cultural field. I can state, that in works we mentioned (and some others), he variegated in interesting way cognition of the past from a point of everyday-life even in a culture-historical sphere in universality.
The arbitrated of dissertation work is the first attemp at complex working-out of Michal Zilinsky's personality not only in Slovak historiography. Michal Zilinsky wras a representative of Ugrian historiography and political scene during the dualistic period in the Hungarian imperium. Originally he was a lowland Slovakian who adhered dual identity - Ugrian/Hungarian and in certain lifelong situations Slovakian. He wrote his historical works, propagative works and textbooks in Hungarian language. He was a member of Matica slovenská, but his name is rather connected with the creation of Hungarian-Regional Slovak Educational Alliance in Budapest. As a historian he was a member of several associations, including Hungarian Academy of Science. After pedagogical working at a grammar school in Szarvas he had become a deputy of The Liberal Party; main lord lieutenant at first in Csongrád and later in Zólyom county. His career culminated in the status as a state clerk of the ministry of culture. Moreover, he was a significant functionary of evangelical church in Hungarian imperium (evangelical church's general supervisor).

The aim of subchapter Michal Zilinsky in Correspondence with Representatives of Slovak Cultural and Political Life was to search on basis of chosen letters subjects of Zilinskÿ s correspondence which explicitly concern Slovak cultural background and concretely the letters of Pavol Mudroii, Svetozâr Hurban Vajanskÿ, Samu-el Stefanovic and Pavel Krizko, tied with the period of the years 1885 - 1898. Some Slovaks applied to Zilinsky with various problems concerning topics of Evangelical Church, a sphere of school, even Slo-vak cultural and national problems. Even this choice of saved Zilinsky s correspondence with representatives of Slovak cultural life tells either of his efforts (even methods) to turn their efforts to loyal Hungarian-Country s Slovak Educational Union or of attitudes of Slovak representatives. The interesting feature of the correspondence is even a language,that testifies to attitudes in question of ethnical or national staunchness.
The primary basis of the doctoral thesis consists of materials from Evangélikus Orszâgos Levéltâr (Protestant State Archives) in Budapest, where Zilinsky fund is stored. When writing the work, to the greatest extent we drew, based and worked with information and

data of Hungarian origin. Michal Zilinsky is one of the lesser-known leaders of the period of dualism in Slovakia, as well as in Hungary. In Slovakia, he was studied partly by Miroslav Kmef and in Hungary by Jôzsef Dusnoki-Draskovich. On the other hand, the name of Zilinsky / Zsilinszky is not unknown in Hungary. Hungarians are quite familiar with the name of Endre Bajcsy-Zsilinszky - “martyr of Sopronkôhi-da” - nephew of Michael Zilinsky.
Finally, the presented doctoral thesis is focused on the analysis of selected works, whether biographical or other areas of historio-

graphy. Michal Zilinsky has not been paid much attention to by historiography in Slovakia or Hungary which means there is lack of studies and works dealing with his comprehensive biography. That is why it is not possible to compare the views of Hungarian and Slovak authors. Writing the thesis was made difficult because of the following reasons: his personality has not been studied scientifically so far, barely legible handwriting materials in the Hungarian language and the impossibility of comparing views with other authors. When expressing

my opinion, the task became more difficult even because of his controversial positions: on the one hand, superintendent of the Lutheran Church, and on the other a member of the Freemasons, Slovak awareness vs. Hungarian identity, the founding member of Matica slovcnska vs. the important MTKE member, a member of the ruling party, but a supporter of some persecuted Slovaks and etc.
Dissertation work brings integrated and within the opportunities also a detailed view on the lifelong fortune, political and scientific career of this debatable personality from the view of national attitudes. Basic points of analyse were all above: historical work of Zi-linsky (including regional and clerical history), his social and political life, his activities between official Hungarian politics of dualistic period and Slovakian's nationally emancipatory attitudes. Essential contribution of this work is an extended heuristic basis, which provides detachment of reached conclusions in bigger certainty.
