The source is of personal nature, written in form of a diary. In 1938, the author, a daughter of top officials of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia Marie Svabova and Jan Sverma, fled along with her parents from Czechoslovakia to Moscow, where her parents joined the anti-Nazi resistance and she resumed her high school studies. After her school-leaving exams, she started to study architecture in Moscow. As a daughter of well-established communists, she could have survived the war deep in the rear of the Soviet-German front. However, in the spring of 1943 (following the first fights of the Czechoslovak volunteer unit in the USSR), she decided to enroll in the gradually growing Czechoslovak army abroad. She believed that the youth have to help fight Fascism and Nazism by all means. Jirina Svermova eventually joined the 1st Czechoslovak Independent Brigade in the USSR in August 1943, as a staff typist. On October 1, 1943, she left with the unit for the front near Kiev, where she subsequently asked to be transferred to the signal units. As the staff radio operator of the brigade, she went through the fights in Ukraine, near Bila Tserkva and Ostrozhany at the turn of 1943 and 1944, maintaining connection of the staff with its subordinated units under very though conditions. After transformation of the brigade into the corps consisting of four brigades, she stayed with the 1st brigade and was assigned to the antitank artillery regiment 2 (IPTAP). In the late summer of 1944, she left with this artillery unit for the front again and experienced fierce and bloody fights in the Carpathian Mountains in September and October 1944 (the so called Carpathian-Dukla Operation). She survived the infamous artillery ambush in Machnowka, not being wounded by a pure fortune. However, on that day, her colleague radio operator was killed. She and Svermova were very alike, thus the rumor that Svermova was killed quickly spread in the unit. As of October 28, 189 1944, Jirina Svermova was transferred from the artillery of the 1st brigade to the signal HQ, specifically to the post of the signal platoon leader of the corps signal battalion. As of January 11, 1945, Jirina Svermova was transferred from the corps signal battalion to the propaganda office of the 1st brigade, which lacked people able to handle administration in both Czech and Russian. Svermova occupied the post of the deputy head of the propaganda office. Her task was to monitor and write down the latest news from world battlefields and then compile a bulletin to keep the officers of individual formations informed. Besides this, she gathered information on soldiers and how they fulfill their combat tasks. Then, the propaganda office summarized the stories of the bravest men in newspaper articles, which the soldiers liked to read. Svermova also helped establish national committees in the liberated territories. She was still performing the post of the propaganda officer, when the war came to its end. After the war, Jirina Svermova was demobilized, studied chemistry and married her “brother-in-arms” from the 1st Czechoslovak Army Corps in the USSR, Bedrich Kopold, who served, similarly as her, as a propaganda officer during the war. In the 1950s, her family was persecuted and tried in the so called political trials. Her husband and mother were arrested and she was sentenced to several years of internment. After rehabilitation, she started to work as an academic employee of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in the field of organic chemistry. Besides other achievements, she held a number of patents for inventions in her branch and she also wrote dozens of scientific articles to science magazines about use of radioisotopes in biological and biochemical research. She died of acute leukemia in February 2009. As a number of other soldiers, Jirina Svermova-Kopoldova wrote her diary during the war to reconstruct her combat memories later on. She used small military calendars, fitting into her pocket along with a pencil. She wrote her notes from October 1,1943, when she left with the Czechoslovak brigade for the front, to May 17, 1945, when the Czechoslovak corps attended the ceremonial military parade in Prague. During her almost two-year assignment to the Czechoslovak unit, with frequent experience directly from the front line, she witnessed lots of events. Those, which she 190 found interesting, she wrote down into her small diary. Thus she recorded not only her daily routine (bathing, lodging, meetings with friends), but also the front events, as the fights in the Carpathian Mountains. The notes on individual days usually consist of two or three sentences. If the author witnessed some important event, she wrote a longer note about it. Several days are missing completely, especially in the period from January to May 1945. By then, Jirina Svermova worked for the propaganda office and helped establish the provisional administration in the liberated territories after withdrawal of the German occupants. Therefore, she wrote down only the most important events, as her fathers death or a meeting with her mother. As for accuracy of the diary notes, we can say that, save very few exceptions, Svermova recorded the events correctly. Incorrect data in her diary emerged due to the fact that soldiers were often confronted with rumors, twisted or incomplete information. That is why the editorial footnotes not only explain military terms and introduce some people mentioned in the text, but also verify those pieces of information, which were not absolutely accurate. The diary was written in exquisite and high-standard Czech, which is, however, full of russisms, which stems from the fact that Jirina Svermova had lived with her parents in Moscow since 1939. Regardless of this fact, Jirina Svermova adhered to perfect orthography, high level of phrasing, rich language, fine stylistics and use of fitting and appropriate similes. Despite the fact that she was only twenty years old by then, her language is cultivated, well-written and avoids all vulgarisms. Her style shows that she was a very intelligent, well-read and educated woman. 191
