RESUME
This publication illustrates European connections in the history of Slova-
kia through the example of selected topics. These connections are generally
accepted at the declarative level. However, it is necessary to prove the deep
structural and space-time relations which organically interconnect the Slovak
national story with the history of the entirety of Europe. A research team from
the Centre of Excellence, which worked with the Institute of History of SAS,
has hereby focused on topics within the following thematic fields:
The economic sphere, totalitarianism after WWII and resistance to it, early
medieval and modern elites, nationalism, and the confessional question.
The territory of contemporary Slovakia has been since the early Middle
Ages a part of European history, primarily in the political sense of the word.
Great Moravia was a part of the developing European political system. The
formation of the European feudal system in the area of economics was more
gradual, but the relations and alliances that were established lasted for a long
time. The European system of economic relations in modern times is quite
solid, although after the Second World War the system was of a “dual charac-
ter” and this changed only after 1989,
Agricultural production was a deciding factor for the early Middle Ages
in Europe. Agricultural production was connected with the question of land
possession. A feudal system was formed in Hungary and it was basically iden-
tical with what we know of feudal systems in Western Europe. The ruler was
the formal owner of all of the land in a country. Some remnants of private
ownership obviously still existed in the first period after the Hungarian State
was established. Such remnants were characteristic in the ninth century and
perhaps were even the original proprietary relations characteristic of Hunga-
rian tribes. However, relations in this area, at least the formal/legal ones, were
gradually united on the basis of the principle of monopoly feudal ownership
of land by the ruling dynasty.
Gradually, not only royal administrators, but also the church and nobility
acquired land through gifts and via economic activities connected with the
land. Royal patrimony became more and more a legal category and economic

activities were executed by means of the actual owners of the land. Moreo-
ver, unlike in German countries, where one was given land for life, in Hun-
gary given land could be inherited. Attention has thus far been mainly paid to
arable land. Pavol Hudacek deals in his paper with the question of royal forests
and the dynastic property of the Arpads in the eleventh and twelfth centuries.
During the period when the feudal system in Hungary was being formed,
domestic relations were to a larger and larger extent confronted with relations
in Western Europe, from where also lots of impulses for reforms were brought.
After the death of the Arpads and the commencement of the Anjou dynasty,
the new sovereign dynasty immediately bound itself to the new system prevai-
ling in their home countries. It was therefore natural that the Anjous, by means
of their reforms, tried to introduce economic elements into Hungary which
were typical of the more developed economy of Western Europe. In Hunga-
rian conditions, these reforms brought economic progress which moved the
country closer to the developed economic areas of Europe. Anjouvian econo-
v
mic reforms are dealt with by Martin Stefanik.
From a research point of view, the territory of Central Europe, including
Slovakia, is an extraordinarily interesting territory even in modern times.
Roman Holec has called his contribution literally, a “laboratory of European
economic history”. The location of the Slovak territory results from the geo-
graphic position between Western and Eastern Europe. While in the West,
where intense industrialization was a part of the modernization process and
industry became the dominant economic branch, in the East the agrarian
sector still prevailed. Central Europe, including Slovakia, found itself at the
end of the eighteenth century in a kind of “inner conflict”, in the fight of
the two poles, traditionalism and modernism. This economic conflict did not
result in only economic consequences, but it also significantly influenced social
questions and politics. Roman Holec, in his contribution, thematically discus-
ses this second conflict characteristic of Central Europe. While class and pro-
fessional solidarity was, on one hand, being supported by economic interests,
economic nationalism, on the other hand, was disturbing this multinational
solidarity. Economic nationalism was, after all, a phenomenon which signifi-
cantly affected the entire society.
Land reform after the First World War, which is the centre of interest for
Matej Hanula, was undoubtedly a Europe-wide phenomenon at the time. His-
torically assembled conflicts of land possession and the economical use of this
land became a serious element not only in economics, but also in social areas
and politics. Several countries took to solve this issue. However, their methods
and results differed considerably. Czechoslovak land reform was, in its concep-
ts)

tion, one of the most radical, if we exclude the situation in the Soviet Union
when the Bolsheviks at first won over farmers with promises of land and then
drove them to kolkhozes. Land reforms offer exceptionally rich comparison
material. Matej Hanula focused only on land reform in Slovakia and he fol-
lows to what extent it affected British citizens. A more extensive comparison,
which would include more European countries, is still required.
The question of expansive German politics and its economic tools stand
between economics, politics and military history. Ludovit Hallon and Michal
Schvarz discuss the quite extensive interrelations of the question of Slovakia
and its economics, using the example of the German expansion to oil indus-
try in Southeast Europe after 1938. The Slovak oil industry and industry for
processing diesel oil played an important role in the German military and
economic plans. The authors of this study attach some significant documents.
The field of political history is undoubtedly the most elaborated for the
recognition of mutual relations between Slovak and European history.
Be it in the field of international relations, or diplomacy history, but also
questions relating to the history of political parties and movements, revolutions
or the spread of political ideas and the like, Slovak historiography will likely
be able to prepare a synthetic collective work of this sort in the near future.
The Central European and European context is, as a rule, present in synthetic
works, like in the edition of Slovakia in the Twentieth Century as well as in
a synthesis of Slovakia in the Nineteenth Century, which are currently being
prepared, and in a number of monographs dedicated to Slovak political his-
tory. But there are surely some topics which have not been compiled yet, or
which have been compiled insufficiently. In the present monograph we, there-
fore, focus only on the period after the Second World War, particularly on two
case studies dedicated to the formation of the Soviet bloc Jan Pesek) and on
the position of Slovak dissent before and shortly after 1989 Juraj Marusiak).
The topic of elites has been especially frequent in the last two decades. An
interest in elites, in their formation, transformation and their role in historic
processes has naturally resulted from the knowledge that although history is
created by people, not all people participate with an even hand. Even Slovak
historiography has in the last decades paid attention to elites, even though
these elites have been perceived rather biographically, rather than sociologi-
cally-structurally. This other side of the functioning of elites is, for a fact, still
in its infancy. Sociologists are presently more concerned with this perspective
than historians. The problem of elites is in the present monograph analyzed
in the contributions of Peter Bystricky, Jan Steinhiibel, and Peter Soltes. Their
(446)
SLOVENSKE DEJINY V DEJINACH EUROPY
view is of the elites from the early Middle Ages, and these are Slavic elites, or
more precisely, the elites of the Slavic world.
Peter Bystricky has asked an interesting question in his study That is, the
question of the so-called bestowing of rule by Slavs to non-Slavic rulers cho-
sen by the Slavic community This action is, as far as world history is concer-
ned, known from the case of the Rurik dynasty as Russian rulers. The Slavs
from Central Europe acted in this way in the case of the Frankish merchant
Samo. As opposed to the Ruriks, Samo did no establish his own dynasty, but
the fact of “appointing” foreign rulers in itself allows for certain generaliza-
tions. It allows us, for example, to form the hypothesis that the number and
quantity of Slavic tribes and their degrees of development made it impossible
to identify their “own” prince, so it was easier to appoint an able foreign ruler
to protect and control the territory Peter Bystricky also presents a termino-
logical question — the question of the naming of rulers. This question has
recently launched a debate, which was not initiated by the scientific commu-
nity itself, but by the political sphere and nationalistic mythology. A usage has
been common in Slovak historiography to title rulers with the title of “king”
only in cases where they are crowned with a royal crown and with the approval
of the Pope. Other rulers, meaning also the rulers of Great Moravia, were in
historiography addressed with the name of “princes”. There is no professional
reason to change this usage, nor are there any relevant arguments. Jan Stein-
htibel, in his contribution, has systematically presented the titles that were used
by the rulers at that time. He demonstrates that the entire discussion around
Svatopluk the King was made artificially, and when looking at the period and
professional terminology, this question is irrelevant. The question of whether
Svatopluk was or was not an important ruler is substantial; and there is a mee-
ting of minds as far as this question is concerned. Svatopluk was an important
ruler of his time and even though he obviously longed for a royal title, the cir-
cumstances were unfavourable for his ambitions. The question of elites in the
modern and recent history of Slovakia is also starting to be developed. Elites
in modern times form an extraordinarily interesting topic, even if we only look
V
at them in comparison to the Austrian countries and Hungary, as Peter Soltes
has done in his present contribution. It is possible to presume that the compa-
rison of certain phenomena in ancient and modern history can be productive
in the development of historical knowledge, and it is thus necessary to work
systematically on such comparisons — not only within the territory of Central
Europe, but also within all of Europe.
The link between Slovak and European history in the nineteenth century is
markedly affected by the phenomenon of nationalism. Nationalism influenced
(447)
Dusan kovac et al.
European history in all areas. It was not only an ideology and politics, but also
of economics, culture and sport. Whereas until the mid 1990s the so-called
primordialistic conception prevailed in Slovak historiography political science,
ethnology, social anthropology and sociology — which understood the nation
as conceived as an eternal or almost eternal entity — recently academia, except
for several authors, has adopted the conception of a nation as an entity created
and formed in the historic process by means of the national agitation of elites.
This conception corresponds to the current state of historical knowledge, and
the understanding of a nation as an “invented tradition” allows us to more
fully understand Slovak national history. In the present study, the nation and
nationalism is analysed in the theoretical contribution of Ladislav Voros and
the work of Juraj Benko. It is interesting to watch how nationalism gradually
gained control over the thinking of elites, forming a complex nationalistic ide-
ology and basing political programs around it. Nationalism became a society-
-wide phenomenon which took control of politics, economics (Roman Holec),
and all areas of social life. Juraj Benko shows us in his study, on the base of
rich source material, that nationalism even seized control over the socialistic
movement not only before but also after the First World War, over the leftist
movement, including the communist movement, which on the outside argued
with internationalistic mottos.
The confessional question was also of all-European character. Medieval
Europe was built as a continent with prevailing Christianity. After the first
schism, Christianity was divided into western and eastern segments, which
according to Arnold J. Toynbee, was a sufficient reason for the delimitation
of these two Christian communities as two separated civilizations. After the
previous “heresies”, that is Wycliffe s and Hus teachings, a new schism broke
out fully in the sixteenth century which divided Western Christianity into the
Catholic and Protestant Churches. All these processes took place in Slovakia
too. Eva Kowalska, in her study, looks at the Hungarian confessional exile,
which she views not only in the area of international politics but also in cul-
ture. Ingrid Kusnirakova, in her comparative study, compares the closing of
monasteries in the Hapsburg monarchy and in the German Reich.
