The 2008 economic crisis was massive in scale, but as Daniel Drezner shows in The System
Worked, the global economy underwent a remarkably quick—and improbable—recovery.
Thanks to the efforts of central bankers and other policymakers in the world’s leading
international institutions, the international response was sufficiently coordinated to prevent
the crisis from becoming a full-fledged depression. Yet the narrative about the failure of
multilateral economic institutions persists, both because the Great Recession affected powerful
nations whose governments managed their own economies poorly and because the most
influential policy analysts who write the books and articles on the crisis hail from those nations.
He offers a bracing counterargument to the conventional wisdom, outlining the nimble ways
in which institutions and nations responded to the calamity. In fact, global institutions may
have become even more resilient because of the crisis. A revisionist tour de force, The System
Worked forces to us to fundamentally rethink what we know about the crisis and its aftermath.

of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, a Nonresident Senior Fellow at the Brookings
Institution, and the author of the Spoiler Alerts blog for the Washington Post. He is the
