Modelling and significance for understanding global change, demonstrating multi-
disciplinary context

The papers in this issue demonstrate the benefits of several approaches to advance our understanding
of extreme hydrological events:
by modelling, e.g. by numerical simulation of a morphodynamic model and by contemporary two-dimen-
sional hydraulic modelling showing the selected geomorphic effectiveness of moderate flows;
by analyzing historical data in order to augment continuous records e.g. by analysing floods caused
by extreme precipitation events for which historical records from the 13lh century are available, by
exploring the significance of clustering of events in the records of several areas, by relating these
series characteristics of flood frequency analysis to the hydrological and climatic characteristics of the
catchment, by revealing the management implications of anthropogenic flood events before 1600, and
by reconstruction of major past discharges consequent upon ice-dam lake development and drainage;
and by collecting and analysing data from different areas in a consistent, reproducible way.
While the results described in these papers are specific to particular timescales they may be applied
to events at other timescales and collectively contribute to the understanding of extreme hydrological
events.
Extreme hydrological events have come into focus and it is now recognized that understanding of such
events depends upon analysis of historical and prehistoric events and also from geomorphological
research. A multidisciplinary perspective is necessary and was adopted by the HEX project which was
one foundation for the international conference held in Bonn 9th - 15th June 2014 where the papers of
this issue were presented.
This volume is of interest for every geoscientist wishing to learn about the significance for understanding
global change the adjoint multidisciplinary context, including that of palaeohydrology.
