/
The first issue of Commonwealth was published in 1975 by the Société Française d’Etudes du
Commonwealth (created in 1971), now the Société d'Etude des Pays du Commonwealth (SEPC).
Victor Dupont, who produced the first issue, established early contacts with the
Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies (ACLALS, founded
in 1965), so the journal had an internadonal dimension from its beginnings. Robert
Mane (U. of Pau) edited issues 2 and 3 (1976 to 1982) as editor of Commonwealth Essays
and Studies, and Michel Fabre (Paris 3) guest-edited issues 4 and 5 (1979 to 1982). From
1983 to 2005, Jean-Pierre Durix (U. of Dijon) edited the journal and Carole Froude-
Durix (U. of Dijon) provided crucial editorial assistance. Since 1983, the journal has
been published twice a year; every other issue is devoted to the proceedings of the
yearly Société des Anglicistes de l'Enseignement Supérieur (SAES) thematic workshop on
“New Literatures,” and is guest-edited by the chair of the workshop. Marta Dvorak
(Sorbonne Nouvelle — Paris 3) was editor of the journal from 2005 to 2011, and Claire
Omhovère (U. of Montpellier) is the current editor. The evolution of the journal’s
contents reflects the conceptual shift from Commonwealth studies to postcolonial
studies, and the present interest in the effects of globalisation on English-language
literature. The journal has also begun a transition to digital publicadon, to maintain its
profile as a valued international contribution to the study of literature in English.

Fabre (1983-1998), Jacqueline Bardolph (1998-1999), Jean-Pierre Durix (1999-2005),
