| adam_text | With a focus on the peasantry of the village of Tabo in the Spiti Valley in the northwestern Himalayas,
this study reconstructs for the first time the development of socio-economic organisation in the Tibetan-
speaking areas of Spiti and Upper Kinnaur on the Indo-Tibetan border in Himachal Pradesh (India) over
the course of the 10th to 2oih centuries. This ethnographic account is combined with an investigation
of the system of land ownership in association with the system of taxes and dues to provide an analysis
of the historical and current relations between the power-holders and the agricultural producers.
Additionally, the region’s political history, playing an essential role in this context, is delineated for
the first time. Likewise, in twelve excursuses, selected key topics (such as administrative and taxation
systems, corvée labour, regional, supraregional and transnational wool trade, the economy of Buddhist
monastic communities and monasteries, and the development of population figures) are examined
from a comparative perspective.
Christian jahoda is a social anthropologist specialising in Tibetan society at the Institute for Social
Anthropology at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna. His recent publications have appeared
in JIATS, Études Asiatiques, Orientations, Cahiers d’Extrême-Asie and in the volumes Ritual, Conflict
and Consensus and Khorchag (Vienna: Austrian Academy of Sciences Press).
