SUMMARY
This work is devoted to the Eustachy and Emilia Wróblewski State Library in
Vilnius (1926—1939) and to the societies which contributed to its establishment and
development: the Society of the Eustachy and Emilia Wróblewski State Library
(1912—1922), the Eustachy and Emilia Wróblewski Scientific Society (1922—1939),
and the Society of Friends of the Eustachy and Emilia Wróblewski State Library
(1936-1939).
The aim of this work is to, first of all, determine when and how the societies
and the library were established, who founded them, and what their goals and tasks
were. We also discuss the organisational structure, scope of activity and sources of
financing of the above institutions, as well as their achievements and difficulties
they encountered while carrying out their statutory tasks.
We paid particular attention to members of the library and of the supporting so-
cieties, attempting to determine their exact number, names, nationality and profes-
sion. We also showed how private individuals, as well as state and social institu-
tions, helped the library, and we discussed its relations with other libraries and with
the centres of science and culture.
The time span covers the years between the two world wars. The only exception
is the Society of the Eustachy and Emilia Wróblewski State Library, which began its
activity in 1912 and continued it until 1922, initiating the original collection of the
Eustachy and Emilia Wróblewski State Library. We also took into account the first
years of the Second World War, when the Wróblewski State Library was national-
ised and handed over to the Institute of Lithuanian Studies and then to the Academy
of Sciences of the Lithuanian Socialist Soviet Republic. The supporting Polish so-
cial societies were closed down and their assets were nationalised.
The work consists of an introduction, five chapters and a conclusion. Each chap-
ter is divided into a few subchapters. In the introduction, we outline the aim of the
study, its time span, and we list the most important literature and sources. The first
chapter focuses on the foundation and activity of the Society of the Eustachy and
Emilia Wróblewski State Library (1912—1922), the second chapter — on the Eus-
tachy and Emilia Wróblewski Scientific Society (1922—1939), the third chapter — on
the Society of Friends of the Eustachy and Emilia Wróblewski State Library (1936—
1939), the fourth chapter — on the Eustachy and Emilia Wróblewski State Library
(1926—1939), while the fifth one — on what happened to the Wróblewski State Li֊

brary and its supporting societies during the Second World War. In the conclusion,
on the basis of the literature references and sources, we discuss the importance of
the library and societies for the development of science and culture, for the dissemi-
nation of scientific knowledge of the history and culture of the nations of the former
Grand Duchy of Lithuania, as well as for the preservation of the cultural heritage of
Vilnius and of the Vilnius Region. The book includes biographical entries of people
connected with the Wróblewski State Library and its supporting societies, as well as
tables, bibliography, index of names, and illustrations.
The Eustachy and Emilia Wróblewski State Library (1925-1939) and its sup-
porting societies played an important role in the scientific and cultural life of Vil-
nius and of the Vilnius Region. They not only shared location in the same building
on the Neris river, but they also closely cooperated in order to preserve, study and
disseminate knowledge of the history and culture of the nations of the former Grand
Duchy of Lithuania and its surrounding states. Their common feature was the fact
that they were all established and operated owing to the active support of the Polish
society, especially the intelligentsia.
The author of the idea to establish the Eustachy and Emilia Wróblewski State
Library was a well-known barrister, bibliophile and social activist from Vilnius,
Tadeusz Wróblewski. To that end, in 1912, he founded the Society of the Eustachy
and Emilia Wróblewski State Library, which throve until the First World War: it
collected a great many books and planned to build a building for keeping them.
T. Wróblewski himself was the biggest donor to the future library. In 1913, he
handed over to the Society: a square for building the library building, 40,000 rou-
bles in cash to start the construction, a book collection of 65,000 volumes, about
5,000 manuscripts, over 10,000 documents, letters and autographs, collections of
paintings, prints, maps, medals, stamps and Freemasons’ documents. Apart from
the library of the Wróblewski family, those collections included libraries of a num-
ber of well-known Polish scientific and cultural activists. Other members of the
society and some private individuals also donated books, manuscripts and muse-
um pieces. Until the library building was completed, all collections had been kept
in Wróblewski’s flat.
The outbreak of the First World War thwarted the plans of the Society of the Eu-
stachy and Emilia Wróblewski State Library. Funds kept in banks were lost, mem-
bers of the Society dispersed, and the society died out. The library building had
not been completed, and the collected books and other items remained in T. Wró-
blewski’s flat. Although, due to the war, the Society was not able to accomplish its
main goal - to open the Wróblewski library - it built its solid foundations by build-
ing up a huge collection. What was the greatest achievement of T. Wróblewski and
other members of the Society was the fact that they not only managed to assemble
rich collections, including rare antique books, manuscripts, and souvenirs connect-
ed with historical figures and artists of Polish culture, but they were also able to pre-

serve them in the hard times of war and occupation, when so many items of cul tural
value were irrevocably lost.
The idea of the establishment of the Wróblewski Library became feasible again
after Vilnius and the Vilnius Region became part of the reborn Polish state. The
matter was dealt with by the Eustachy and Emilia Wróblewski Scientific Society,
which was founded in 1922 to replace the deteriorated Society of the Eustachy and
Emilia Wróblewski State Library. In the last years of its founder’s life, the Com-
mittee of the Wróblewski Scientific Society began - in his knowledge and with his
consent — negotiations with the Ministry of Religious Faiths and Public Enlighten-
ment on handing over the collection to the Polish state. However, T. Wróblewski
did not live to sign the agreement ֊ he died on 3 July 1925, when all the conditions
had already been agreed. In accordance with his will, the Committee, on 1 February
1926, signed the agreement with the Ministry of Religious Faiths and Public En-
lightenment. The agreement stipulated that all the collections would be handed over
to the state as a perpetual deposit on the condition they were not divided and taken
out from Vilnius without the Committee of the Society’s permission. In return, the
Ministry obliged itself to provide financing and seat for the Eustachy and Emilia
Wróblewski State Library.
After the establishment of the Wróblewski State Library, the Wróblewski Sci-
entific Society continued its close cooperation with the management of the library.
The society’s help for the library was particularly important during the hard times
of the Great Depression, when the state budget cut its subsidies. The society’s mon-
ey was used to buy a lot of valuable prints, manuscripts, drawings and museum ob-
jects, including Ludwik Abramowicz’s collection of 220 items (paintings, draw-
ings, portraits of people connected with Vilnius), which constituted the foundation
of a new museum department, commonly known as the Iconographie Museum of
Vilnius.
The Wróblewski Scientific Society also supported publishing scientific works.
They mainly promoted publications of studies devoted to the history and multina-
tional culture of the lands of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In the period
between 1930 and 1939, the Wróblewski Scientific Society contributed to the pub-
lication of six books, which were given to the library and were often exchanged for
books published by other institutions.
The Committee of the Wróblewski Scientific Society also took care of com-
memorating T. Wxoblewski. It organised an annual festival in his honour, on the an-
niversary of his death on 3 July 1926. It made sure that a headstone was erected and
consecrated at the Ross cemetery in Vilnius on 28 October 1931. There was also
a special exhibition in memory of T. Wróblewski.
The Society of Friends of the Eustachy and Emilia Wróblewski State Library,
founded in 1936, ran its activity for only three years, but it managed to gain many
members (in the years 1936—1939, the total number of its members was 145) and

was thriving for all of this period. The main objective of the society was to meet the
scientific and financial needs of the Wróblewski Library. Chairman Rev. Franciszek
Tyczkowski and the members themselves donated books, manuscripts, aits of work,
and museum objects to the library and they encouraged other institutions and pri-
vate individuals to do the same. As of 15 December 1939, the society’s deposit in
the Wróblewski State Library included 3,000 volumes of books and magazines. The
society spent the money from donations on the remuneration of trainees and volun-
teers working in the Wróblewski State Library and on their social insurance. Cur-
rent costs of the Society (administrative and post expenses, event organisation, etc.)
were covered by membership fees and money earned on different sons of events. In
1937, the Society’s revenue was 2,556 zlotys, in 1938 - 2,276 zlotys, and in 1939
(as of 1 September) — 2,636 zlotys. The Society spent the rest of the money in the
first years of the Second World War to support employees and trainees of the Wró-
blewski Library, thus contributing to the preservation of this institution, which held
such an important place in the scientific and cultural landscape of Vilnius.
The Wróblewski State Library in Vilnius was established under the agreement
between the Committee of the Wróblewski Scientific Society and the Ministry of
Religious Faiths and Public Enlightenment, signed on 1 February 1926. The li-
brary covered the expenses connected with its activity using state subsidies, grant-
ed annually from the budget loans of the Ministry, and its own income. In the years
1926-1934, the library spent from 10,333 to 116,226 zlotys a year (higher spending
in some years was the result of the costs of decorating reading rooms, buying neces-
sary equipment, etc.). After the official opening of the library to the public in 1935,
its annual budget was 75,000 zlotys. The reduced state subsidy in the years preced-
ing the war was partly compensated by the aid of 5,400 zlotys a year from the Min-
istry of Social Welfare. Budget money was spent on the remuneration of employees,
various personal allowances, business trips, building maintenance, administrative
expenses, minor redecorations, and special expenses of the library and of the muse-
um, scientific grants. Apart from state subsidies, the library was also supported by
Polish banks, as well as occasionally by other institutions and private individuals.
The money from donors was used to pay for the work of trainees and volunteers.
The employees of the Wróblewski State Library were appointed by the Minis-
try of Religious Faiths and Public Enlightenment, which it was subordinate to. The
directors of the library included: Stefan Rygiel in the years 1926-1932, Erwin Ko-
schmieder in 1932-1934, and Stefan Burhardt from 1934 to 1939. In 1935, when
the library was officially opened, its staff consisted of, apart from director Stefan
Burhardt and honorary custodian Ludwik Abramowicz, five full-time employees,
three part-time employees and five clerks of lower rank. The management of the
library thought such a number of employees was sufficient, and limited financial
means did not allow them to employ any more people.
326
Summary
Apart from full-time and part-time workers, the library also employed train-
ees and volunteers (usually ten people at a time), who were recruited from among
graduates of the Stephen Bathory University and the School of Political Science in
Vilnius. Trainees catalogued books, magazines and manuscripts, checked duplicate
items, sent publications for exchange, etc. The administration of the library and the
board of the Society of Friends of the Wróblewski Library did their best to make
sure that trainees received a decent pay for their work, offering money donated by
banks and other institutions to that end. Many of those trainees made use of the li-
brary experience obtained in Vilnius after the Second World War, when they took
up jobs in Polish libraries.
The Wróblewski State Library was located in the very centre of Vilnius — in the
former Tyszkiewicz Palace near Cathedral Square on the Neris river. The palace
was purchased by the Ministry of Religious Faiths and Public Enlightenment and,
by the end of 1931, it was renovated and adapted to seat the library. The total cost
of the redecoration reached almost one million zlotys, and with the added cost of
purchasing the building it amounted to 1,200,000 zlotys. Until the renovation was
completed, the collection had been kept in T. Wroblewski’s former flat at 9 Uniw-
ersytecka Street. The main task of the managers and of the few employees of the
library was to take over the collection from the Wróblewski Scientific Society and
move it into the new place.
When all efforts were concentrated on the renovation and redecoration of the
library building and on the preparation of the collection for moving, there was no
real opportunity to expand the collection using budget resources. New items were
added thanks to the donations of private individuals and institutions. In 1931, ma-
jor construction works had been already completed and the collection was moved to
the building at 2 Zygmuntowska Street, where, despite obstacles caused by flood, it
began to be arranged. The library collection consisted of two parts then: 1) the per-
petual deposit of the Wróblewski Scientific Society, which was being consistently
expanded owing to the Society’s purchases and its members’ donations; 2) the part
belonging to the State (based on Alfred Tyszkiewicz’s collection, bought together
with the palace), which was enlarged by means of purchases made from budget-
ary funds and thanks to subsidies from particular individuals or institutions. More-
over, from 1 January 1932, the library began to receive the obligatory library copy
of prints published in four north-eastern voivodeships: the Vilnius voivodeship, the
Nowogródek voivodeship, the Białystok voivodeship and the Polesie voivodeship,
which led to a rapid increase in the size of its collection.
What played an important role in the successful development of the Wróblewski
State library was its cooperation with the Scientific Research Institute of Eastern
Europe. In 1933, under the agreement signed earlier, the library took over the book
collection of the institute (approximately 6,000 volumes). The Soviet literature ac-
counted for a large part of it. Not only did the institute hand over its book collection

to the library, but it also obliged itself to hand over further purchases, including the
Soviet literature, which was hardly available in interwar Vilnius.
When the building on the Neris was still being renovated and the collection was
still in the founder’s former flat, the Wróblewski Library was generally considered
not open and people could use the collection only through the University Public Li-
brary. In 1929, the management of the Wróblewski Library officially stopped lend-
ing prints and manuscripts through the University Library due to the transfer of the
collection to the building in Zygmuntowska Street. As an exception, however, the
library director issued special permission even during the move. After moving to the
newly decorated building, readers still had only limited access to the collection, be-
cause all efforts were focused on arranging, ordering and cataloguing items. How-
ever, just like in the previous years, special exceptions were made for individuals
conducting scientific studies. The number of readers significantly increased in 1933
as the library took over the book collection of the Scientific Research Institute of
Eastern Europe. The collection was used by members of the Institute, employees
and students of the institute, employees and students of the School of Political Sci-
ence and of the Stephen Bathory University, journalists, lawyers, and other people
interested in it with the permission of the library management.
The Wróblewski State Library was officially opened on 22 June 1935. At the
moment of its opening, the library had, among other things: a) in the print section —
98,580 volumes of books and magazines, about 26,870 ephemeral prints, 3,500 du-
plicates; b) in the manuscript section — 3,160 volumes of manuscripts, 8,160 auto-
graphs (letters), 17,990 acts (fascicles), 380 loose records, including 43 parchments;
c) in the cartographic section - 305 atlases, about 1,400 maps and plans (includ-
ing 187 manuscript ones); d) in the drawing (graphic) section֊ 263 albums, about
12,760 drawings and illustrations, 2,590 photographs and 290 bookplates. The mu-
seum collection of the library consisted of a few main parts: 1) The collection of
iconography, i.e. the Iconographic Museum of Vilnius, founded in 1931, which had
about 400 exhibit items, including: oil paintings ֊35, watercolours - 35, pastels and
drawings — 20, etchings and lithographs — 7, photographs - 25, sculptures, medals
and medallions — 15, plans — 4, albums — 25, drawings and illustrations ֊ ok. 200;
2) The Freemasons’ collection, including over 420 museum objects and original
Freemasons’ prints; 3) The collection of objects that were a memento of the found-
er and the Neo-Blackguards’ Society, comprising about 280 items. Apart from the
above main collection, the museum section of the library included a collection of
numismatic items, other minor collections and individual items. In the following
years, thanks to the efforts of the management and of the supporting societies, the
library collection systematically increased in size.
The Wróblewski State Library was open from 9 to 15 and from 18 to 21. Dur-
ing summer months, i.e. in July and August, it was available for readers from 9
to 15. There were four reading rooms: 1. The main reading room with 104 seats;
328
Summary
2. The newspaper reading room; 3. The Soviet literature reading room; 4. The read-
ing room of special collections (manuscripts, antique books, maps, drawings, mu-
sical notes, and albums). Employees of the Scientific Research Institute, professors
and students of the School of Political Science, students of the Stephen Bathory
University, librarians, journalists, reporters, scientific and social institutions used
the library free of charge. Other readers were charged a small fee.
The use of the continuously increasing collection was facilitated by catalogue
cards. There were alphabetic catalogues of: a) books, b) periodicals; c) lithuanicas;
d) the main reading room, e) special collections; section catalogues of: a) the main
reading room; b) the deposit of the Scientific Research Institute of Eastern Europe
and a special topographic catalogue according to the time and place of the publica-
tion of prints from the territory of the former Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Due to un-
derstaffing, difficulties arose in cataloguing the incoming prints. As of 15 Decem-
ber 1939, approximately 25,000 volumes of books and 500 volumes of magazines
remained uncatalogued.
The Wróblewski State Library and the museum exhibitions it hosted were vis-
ited, apart from readers, by many school tours, soldiers, teachers and other educa-
tional workers, librarians and library managers, people of science and art, and top
state officials.
The activity of the Wróblewski State Library and its supporting societies, as well
as of other institutions from Vilnius, was disturbed by the outbreak of the Second
World War. Men of military age, including director Stefan Burhardt, were called to
arms and, during the tragic September of 1939, were taken captive by the Soviet
army or put into internment camps for Polish soldiers in Lithuania. The employees
of the Wróblewski Library who remained in Vilnius, together with members of its
supporting societies, dealt with wartime matters in the first weeks of September,
such as: protecting the building and the library collection against fire, stocking up
with fuel and paraffin oil, organising support for people who found themselves in
a difficult material situation because of the war.
During the times of the first Soviet occupation (September — October 1939), the
collection of the Wróblewski Library was partly plundered, but most of it remained.
In the autumn of 1939, after Vilnius and the Vilnius Region became part of the Lith-
uanian Republic, the Wróblewski Library came under the authority of the Lithua-
nian Ministry of Education, which took over all its assets. The collection of the li-
brary at the time included: books and magazines - 156,732 catalogued volumes and
about 25,500 uncatalogued magazines, works about art and albums — about 3,000,
atlases and maps — about 2,500, manuscripts — 3,300, autographs — 9,605, docu-
ments — 242, files with archival materials — 122, drawings — 11,043, original draw-
ings — 968, albums with drawings — 25, architectural plans — 54, postcards — 14,307,
photographs - 2726, notes — 399, museum objects — 2,793. On 4 November 1939,

a Lithuanian teacher and activist, Antanas Valaitis, was appointed the new adminis-
trator of the library. He held this office until 5 September 1940.
Under the act of the Lithuanian government of 27 October 1939, the societies
supporting the Wróblewski State Library could continue their activity only with the
permission of the Lithuanian authorities, which, as a rule, did not grant such con-
sent to them. Nevertheless, members of those societies played an important part in
the preservation of the library in the first years of the Second World War. The re-
maining funds of the Wróblewski Scientific Society and the Society of Friends of
the Wróblewski Library were used to support jobless and destitute employees and
trainees of the library. Moreover, at the end of 1939 and in the first half of 1940,
the Committee of the Wróblewski Scientific Society made appeals to the Lithuani-
an authorities to deal with the problem of the library and its employees, pointing at
their needs.
With the establishment of Soviet rule in Lithuania, resulting in Lithuania’s be-
coming a part of the USSR (June—July 1940), the societies supporting the Wró-
blewski Library, which had continued its activity in limited scope in the times of the
Lithuanian Republic, were disbanded and their assets were nationalised. The Wró-
blewski State Library was also nationalised and, on 1 September 1940, came un-
der the authority of the Institute of Lithuanian Studies, which had been moved from
Kaunas to Vilnius. The library was renamed to the Central Library of the Institute
of Lithuanian Studies. In the autumn of 1940, a specially appointed commission re-
vised the library collection. As the result of that revision, almost half of the collec-
tion was moved to shelters and was kept isolated from readers, and about 10% of it
was deemed to be in conflict with the Constitution of the Lithuanian SSR and with
the established social order. Consequently, it was „withdrawn from circulation,”
which means that it was actually destroyed.
At the beginning of 1941, the former Wróblewski State Library changed its
name and owner once again. On 16 January 1941, the Institute of Lithuanian Stud-
ies was transformed into the Academy of Sciences of the Lithuanian SSR, which
also took over the library, renamed to the Central Library of the Academy of Scienc-
es of the Lithuanian SSR. Before the outbreak of the war between the Soviet Union
and Nazi Germany, the collections of many other disbanded Polish institutions and
societies, including a part of the collection of the Friends of Science Society, were
joined to the book collection of the Central Library of the Academy of Sciences of
the Lithuanian SSR.
When Vilnius was occupied by the Germans, the former Wróblewski State Li-
brary operated as the Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences for some time.
It was closed down in 1943 upon the order of the German occupational authorities.
After Vilnius was liberated from the German occupation and came under Soviet
authority, the library restored its activity as the Central Library of the Academy of
Sciences of the Lithuanian SSR. Throughout the whole Soviet period, it made its

collections available to scientific institutions, it collected literature, conducted stud-
ies in the field of library science, issued catalogues, various bibliographic guides,
etc. Just like other libraries in Vilnius, it was subject to the scrutiny of the authori-
ties and to a number of limitations. Nonetheless, it remained an important centre of
science and culture.
After Lithuania regained independence in 1991, the library was still named the
Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. In 2009, it even received the name
of its founder (Wróblewski) again (Lietuvos moksly akademijos Vrublevskiy bibli-
oteka). Its rich collection of books and manuscripts (as of December 2011, its col-
lection consisted of 3,755,249 items, including 267,449 manuscript documents),
with constantly added new purchases, serves students and researchers of the shared
history of Lithuania and Poland.
