Death - Exile - Starvation in Personal Documents. Polish Lands during the Great War
1914-1918
Abstract
The First World War was the first total war which started on the European continent and soon spread to other regions of the world. The war affected also the Polish lands, in which war front-lines were fluctuating. A specificity of the situation in this region was - as it has been observed many times - that in 1914 it belonged to three different states which, to the joy of many, not only politicians, found themselves in opposite political camps. A conflict between the partitioning powers offered yet another chance to regain independence.
The Great War became one of the main pillars of the myth of Polish revived statehood. It was supplemented by the memory of the Polish Legions, especially vivid after 1926, which fitted perfectly with the tradition of national uprisings. It was also suitable for the founding myth of the Polish Army. Fairly soon the memory of Poles fighting in the armies of the partitioning powers was erased from the collective memory of the past, which was made easier by the Polish-Bolshevik war of 1919-1921. And sufferings of civilians were not mentioned. The memory of war miseries and victims was replaced with “the joy for the garbage-heap regained”.
In the book I attempt to fill in the gap in Polish research and gain an insight into the ways in which inhabitants of the Polish lands perceived the war, reacted to it and wrote about it. I have based the book on the analysis of selected personal documents, mainly diaries, memoirs and reminiscences, as well as letters.
In my opinion, there are three main phenomena characteristic of the analysed region in the period of the First World War: death, migrations and famine. And although all the three were present here also before 1914, they intensified greatly in 1914-1918 becoming, I think, characteristic of

the war experiences of large groups of population in the territories of the future Polish Republic. It also seems to me that the dynamics of these phenomena was geographically diverse. Thus, as regards migrations, or war emigration, to be exact, the Prussian lands made an exception, for in these territories it was a relatively small number of people who were forced to leave their homes. The only exception was the area of Eastern Prussia in the first period of the war. Starvation was less severe in the countryside, especially in Galicia, although research of Jerzy Paj^k recommends caution also in this regard. Undoubtedly, in the case of food shortage, the situation was always worse in towns than in the countryside, in all the three partitions, especially in the second part of the war. Only death did not make any geographical exceptions, or at least it is very hard to perceive in the analysed sources. At the same time, as indicated by personal sources, these three phenomena besides the issues related to the regaining of independence are another component of the collective memory of the First World War. Together with the reflection on the outbreak of the war they are the keystone of the book.
In the first chapter, entitled “From the euphoria/trauma to everyday war life” I analyse accounts of waiting for the war, its outbreak and first war experiences. The war began at various times for individual authors of documents: it came indirectly together with war information in the press, directly with troops marching by, with enlisting or conscription to the army, with the approach of the front-line, first killed and wounded, the necessity to leave own house and difficulties they experienced when trying to return home, and finally with food shortages, the lack of cash and available employment. Reactions to the outbreak of the war make an important part of war memories. A transition from the time of peace to the time of war could be found in almost all analysed source documents. For many authors, the outbreak of the war and first contacts with the reality of war was a special moment of passage, of change in their former ways of life and it reflects their anxiety and fear of the impeding inevitable. For this reason the chapter includes also gossip and rumour as a reflection of the uncertainty of the first period of the war.
The second chapter is entitled: “Death” and is the most comprehensive within the book. Its volume is a result of the fact that numerous accounts, which is obvious for war reports, concern this problem, especially military reports. It can therefore be considered that widely understood problems associated with death and diseases of the war times were important for diarists and memoirists. Besides, a war, especially a war of this magnitude, brings about important questions which have animated mankind since the dawn of history about the passing of time and meaning of life. Direct,

Abstract
sometimes everyday personal contacts with death situations and experiences of the fragility of human life must have, and did intensify people’s fear of dying and death. On the other hand, however, it increased their indifference to death. The will to live and survive competed with a perceptible decrease in the value of human life. These phenomena could be observed mainly among soldiers. The chapter includes also passages devoted to people who survived physical and psychical mutilation. A scale of permanent war injuries and neuroses became a characteristic feature of the Great War already during war operations. There are only small mentions of those phenomena in personal documents, and for this reason they are supplemented by information found in the contemporary Polish press. What is also important are the motives which, despite all the traumatic images seen at that time, made it possible to keep one’s post, provide assistance and care for the wounded.
Chapter three is devoted to war emigrants. Its place within the narrative is set by the frequency of occurrence of war wanderings and the number of people who were forced to leave their homes. The problem of organisation of migrants and assistance for them has already been examined, at least to a certain degree. Thus, I focus my attention on the descriptions of emigrants made by outside observers and, wherever possible, I let them speak through the articles written for the press or interventional letters addressed to various people and institutions in order to organise assistance. This chapter includes also my reflections on the reality of refugee camps organised in the Austrian, Czech and Moravian territories, since in most cases they were the reason for which refugees were looking for help. The part on war emigration closes with my thoughts on the role of home understood as the place of anchoring.
The next chapter focuses on the phenomenon of famine. The term itself makes, like the words used in the titles of the previous chapters, a certain watchword. First of all, I attempt to establish whether famine was suffered and to what extent. Then, what was called famine? I have also reconstructed difficulties related to lack of food and other products of daily use, trying to pick out from their accounts reactions of people to war shortages. But I entirely omit problems of the war economy - wages, fluctuation of food prices, or the size of unemployment. I have more focused on what and in which manner was said about the economic situation, both at the individual and global level, and about reactions to it.
An analysis of various types of personal documents makes it possible to indicate that in many cases they constitute an irreplaceable historical source. They enrich our knowledge about the past with an emotional context, both at the individual level and that of social groups. What is of special interest for the historian is in my opinion a juxtaposition of sources created at the time

when the events occurred with those written much later, for they reveal the process of formation of individual and collective memory. A dynamics of disclosing of facts and emotions. Because only after some time it is possible for people to assess the weight of events they participated in. For this reason memoirs written a long time after the events contain the information and experiences which for various reasons were most important for the author. The accounts written at the time, on the other hand, despite some repetitions or long-drawn-out passages, give us the author’s authentic emotions and the chance to observe an individual passage of time. They give us the chance to see what was interesting for the author at the time of writing and how he perceived the reality. The possibility to compare these two ways of description, during the event and after it, broadens the spectrum of our observation of the described phenomenon and makes it possible to assess its value in a longer time perspective. It allows us to perceive its role in the making of autobiographic creation.
The studies reveal that the destabilisation of day-to-day functioning observed by diarists and memoirists in the first period of the war was increasingly commonplace. What initially was perceived as unusual, with time was becoming part of everyday life, with its own war specificity. This specific war well-being could be observed in personal documents written by Poles, although it is diversified with respect to social background and cultural norms regarding aspirations and standards of living.
Records regarding economic living conditions under the occupation make it possible to establish which shortages in the market were the most painful for the people. Their analysis leads us to the conclusion that perception of the standard of living was changing. It also reveals that there were many ways of dealing with market shortages both at the level of actual actions and mental sphere.
The analysis of memoirs gives us a good insight into the evolution of social perception of death. They reveal in what way both individuals and social groups reacted to new phenomenons that the word had brought with it: the sight of the bodies of massacred people, battlefields overspread with dead corpses, etc. It also indicates that certain experiences were left outside the narrative, like permanent physical disability or serious psychological damage.
Records written on an ongoing basis demonstrate a process of adaptation that affected every participant of the war, although to a various degree. They also reveal the emergence of certain alienation between civilians and soldiers.
An important question that arises from the research into war narratives is the question about their local and national dimensions. It seems that it

Abstract
is possible to capture certain specific features. A supralocality or universality of social relations is also present within the sphere of social activity and fears associated with war, especially fear for life or survival of the immediate family members. Locality manifested itself in specific war experiences characteristic of different geographical areas. For example, war emigration during the war was an experience of a limited albeit large group of the inhabitants of the Polish lands. Of similar local dimension is, in my opinion, also the phenomenon of shortages. In this case the locality, as in the case of emigration, is understood not only geographically but also as a community.
Thus, a closer look at personal documents leads us to the conclusion that for the inhabitants of Polish lands the First World War was - at least as long as it continued - the Great War.
