Mass-produced, full-color, large-format war posters were both a sign and an instrument of this historic shift in warfare. War posters celebrated, in both their form and content, the modernity of the conflict. They also reached an enormous international audience through their prominent display and continual reproduction in pamphlets and magazines in every combatant nation, uniting diverse populations as viewers of the same image and bringing them closer, in an imaginary and powerful way, to the war. Most war posters were aimed particularly at civilian populations. Posters nationalized, mobilized, and modernized those populations, thereby influencing how they viewed themselves and their activities. The home-front life -- factory work, agricultural work, domestic work, the consumption and conservation of goods, as well as various forms of leisure -- became, through the viewing of posters, emblematic of national identity and of each citizen's place within the collective effort to win the war. Essays by Jay Winter, Jeffrey T. Schnapp, Jennifer D. Keene, and others reveal the centrality of visual media, particularly the poster, within the specific national contexts of Britain, France, Germany, Russia, and the United States during World War I. Ultimately, posters were not merely representations of popular understanding of the war, but instruments influencing the reach, meaning, and memory of the war in subtle and pervasive ways"--Provided by publisher |

Kinder -- - Epilogue - Jeffrey T. Schnapp "The First World War was waged through the participation not just of soldiers but of men, women, and children on the home front. Ultimately, posters were not merely representations of popular understanding of the war, but instruments influencing the reach, meaning, and memory of the war in subtle and pervasive ways"--Provided by publisher World War (1914-1918) fast 1900 - 1999 fast Geschichte 1900-2000 HISTORY / Military / World War I. bisacsh Popular culture fast Propaganda fast Social aspects fast Visual communication fast War posters fast Geschichte Gesellschaft Weltkrieg (1914-1918) World War, 1914-1918 Posters War posters History 20th century World War, 1914-1918 Art and the war Visual communication History 20th century Popular culture History 20th century World War, 1914-1918 Social aspects World War, 1914-1918 Propaganda Semiotik (DE-588)4054498-9 gnd rswk-swf Plakat (DE-588)4046198-1 gnd rswk-swf Erster Weltkrieg Motiv (DE-588)4189594-0 gnd rswk-swf Visuelle Kommunikation (DE-588)4131112-7 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4143413-4 Aufsatzsammlung gnd-content Erster Weltkrieg Motiv (DE-588)4189594-0 s Plakat (DE-588)4046198-1 s Visuelle Kommunikation (DE-588)4131112-7 s Semiotik (DE-588)4054498-9 s 2\p DE-604 James, Pearl Sonstige oth Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 0-8032-2610-1 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-8032-2610-4 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=298295 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
