Beschreibung: | Includes bibliographical references and index From Daniel Defoe to Joseph Conrad, from Virginia Woolf to Derek Walcott, the sea has always been an inspiring setting and a powerful symbol for generations of British and Anglophone writers. Seaing through the Past is the first study to explicitly address the enduring relevance of the maritime metaphor in contemporary Anglophone fiction through in-depth readings of fourteen influential and acclaimed novels published in the course of the last three decades. The book trenchantly argues that in contemporary fiction, maritime imagery gives expression to postmodernism's troubled relationship with historical knowledge, as theorised by Hayden White, Linda Hutcheon, and others. The texts in question are interpreted against the backdrop of four aspects of metahistorical problematisation. Thus, among others, Iris Murdoch's The Sea, the Sea (1978) is read in the context of auto/biographical writing, John Banville's The Sea (2005) as a narrative of personal trauma, Julian Barnes's A History of the World in 10 Chapters (1989) as investigating the connection between discourses of origin and the politics of power, and Fred D'Aguiar's Feeding the Ghosts (1997) as opening up a postcolonial perspective on the sea and history. Persuasive and topical, Seaing through the Past offers a compelling guide to the literary oceans of today |

Persuasive and topical, Seaing through the Past offers a compelling guide to the literary oceans of today 1900 - 2099 fast Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1978-2007 gnd rswk-swf LITERARY CRITICISM / European / English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh bisacsh English fiction fast English literature fast Ocean travel in literature fast Sea in literature fast Seafaring life in literature fast Sea in literature Ocean travel in literature Seafaring life in literature English literature 20th century History and criticism English fiction 21st century History and criticism Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 gnd rswk-swf Meer Motiv (DE-588)4169235-4 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Seeschifffahrt Motiv (DE-588)4180672-4 gnd rswk-swf Postmoderne (DE-588)4115604-3 gnd rswk-swf Geschichtsphilosophie (DE-588)4020529-0 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4113937-9 Hochschulschrift gnd-content Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Roman (DE-588)4050479-7 s Meer Motiv (DE-588)4169235-4 s Seeschifffahrt Motiv (DE-588)4180672-4 s Geschichte 1978-2007 z 2\p DE-604 Geschichtsphilosophie (DE-588)4020529-0 s Postmoderne (DE-588)4115604-3 s 3\p DE-604 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=473363 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
