Drawing on interviews with public health officials, pharmaceutical company executives, attorneys, Cutter employees and victims of the vaccine, as well as on previously unavailable archives, Dr. Paul Offit offers a full account of the Cutter disaster. He describes America's relief when the polio vaccine was developed by Jonas Salk in 1955, the production of the vaccine at industrial facilities such as the one operated by Cutter, and the tragedy that occurred when 200,000 people were inadvertently injected with live virulent polio virus: 70,000 became ill, 200 were permanently paralysed and 10 died. Dr. Offit also explores how, as a consequence of the tragedy, one jury's verdict set in motion events that eventually suppressed the production of vaccines already licensed and deterred the development of new vaccines that hold the promise of preventing other fatal diseases |

Dr. Offit also explores how, as a consequence of the tragedy, one jury's verdict set in motion events that eventually suppressed the production of vaccines already licensed and deterred the development of new vaccines that hold the promise of preventing other fatal diseases Cutter Laboratories fast Cutter Laboratories Cutter Laboratories (DE-588)7536756-7 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1955 gnd rswk-swf MEDICAL / Preventive Medicine bisacsh MEDICAL / Forensic Medicine bisacsh MEDICAL / Public Health bisacsh HISTORY / United States / 20th Century bisacsh Poliomyelitis / Vaccination fast Poliomyelitis vaccine fast Vaccines fast Poliovirus Vaccines / Popular Works / history / United States Disease Outbreaks / Popular Works / history / United States Drug Industry / Popular Works / history / United States History, 20th Century / Popular Works / United States Mass Immunization / Popular Works / history / United States Poliomyelitis / Popular Works / history / United States Geschichte Medizin Poliomyelitis vaccine History Poliomyelitis Vaccination United States History Vaccines United States Impfstoff (DE-588)4026655-2 gnd rswk-swf Kinderlähmung (DE-588)4163840-2 gnd rswk-swf Arzneimittelschaden (DE-588)4143181-9 gnd rswk-swf USA Cutter Laboratories (DE-588)7536756-7 b Kinderlähmung (DE-588)4163840-2 s Impfstoff (DE-588)4026655-2 s Arzneimittelschaden (DE-588)4143181-9 s Geschichte 1955 z 1\p DE-604 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=188109 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
