Infecting one in approximately nineteen inhabitants, the first epidemic claimed over eighteen thousand lives; in the second, one in twenty-eight caught the disease and over twenty thousand died. Despite the similarity of the epidemics, the first outbreak received far greater attention in the press, popular literature, and personal accounts; it even provoked a series of grisly riots among angry members of the lower classes, who saw cholera as a plot by doctors and government officials to assassinate them. How is it that during the late 1840s, the very time when class had become the dominant framework for interpreting social experience in France, cholera - the quintessential disease of class difference in 1832 - was no longer understood in these terms? In this cultural history, Catherine Kudlick unravels the mystery Introduction: the "Silence of 1849" -- The epidemic and revolutionary traditions of Paris -- Cholera's messengers -- Inventing perceptions of disease and government -- Catholicism and cholera -- Disease and social unrest 1800 - 1899 fast Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1830-1850 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1832-1849 gnd rswk-swf Cholera / Paris / History Disease Outbreaks / Paris / History Cholera / epidemiology / Paris History of Medicine, 19th Cent / Paris Social Change / Paris / History MEDICAL / Preventive Medicine bisacsh MEDICAL / Forensic Medicine bisacsh MEDICAL / Public Health bisacsh Cholera fast Cholera gtt Geschichte Medizin Cholera France Paris History 19th century Soziale Situation (DE-588)4077575-6 gnd rswk-swf Soziokultureller Wandel (DE-588)4227561-1 gnd rswk-swf Cholera (DE-588)4147855-1 gnd rswk-swf Frankreich Paris (DE-588)4044660-8 gnd rswk-swf Paris (DE-588)4044660-8 g Cholera (DE-588)4147855-1 s Soziokultureller Wandel (DE-588)4227561-1 s Geschichte 1832-1849 z 1\p DE-604 Soziale Situation (DE-588)4077575-6 s Geschichte 1830-1850 z 2\p DE-604 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=21253 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
