Beschreibung: | Includes bibliographical references and index Western physics comes to China -- China embraces the theory of relativity -- Six pioneers of relativity -- From eminent physicist to the "poor philosopher" -- Einstein: a hero reborn from the criticism Annotation China and Albert Einstein is the first extensive study in English or Chinese of China's reception of the celebrated physicist and his theory of relativity. Tracing the influence of Jesuit missionaries in the seventeenth century and Western missionaries and educators in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, as they introduced key concepts of Western physical science and paved the way for Einstein's radical new ideas, Danian Hu shows us that Chinese receptivity was fostered by the trickle of Chinese students sent abroad for study beginning in the mid-nineteenth century and by the openness of the May Fourth Movement (1916-1923). In a series of biographical studies of Chinese physicists, Hu describes the Chinese assimilation of relativity and explains how Chinese physicists offered arguments and theories of their own. Hu's account concludes with the troubling story of the fate of foreign ideas such as Einstein's in the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), when the theory of relativity was denigrated along with Einstein's ideas on democracy and world peace. China and Albert Einstein is an important contribution to Einstein studies and a landmark work in the history of Chinese science |

spelling | Hu, Danian Verfasser aut China and Albert Einstein the reception of the physicist and his theory in China 1917-1979 Danian Hu Cambridge, MA Harvard University Press 2005 1 Online-Ressource (xiv, 257 p.) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references and index Western physics comes to China -- China embraces the theory of relativity -- Six pioneers of relativity -- From eminent physicist to the "poor philosopher" -- Einstein: a hero reborn from the criticism Annotation China and Albert Einstein is the first extensive study in English or Chinese of China's reception of the celebrated physicist and his theory of relativity. China and Albert Einstein is an important contribution to Einstein studies and a landmark work in the history of Chinese science Einstein, Albert / Relativitätstheorie / Rezeption / China / Geschichte 1917-1979 swd Einstein, Albert / 1879-1955 / Influence / Travel / China Einstein, Albert / 1879-1955 fast Einstein, Albert 1879-1955 Influence Einstein, Albert 1879-1955 Travel China Einstein, Albert 1879-1955 (DE-588)118529579 gnd rswk-swf May Fourth Movement (China : 1919) fast 1919 fast Geschichte 1917-1979 gnd rswk-swf SCIENCE / Physics / Relativity bisacsh Relativitätstheorie / Einstein, Albert / Rezeption / China / Geschichte 1917-1979 swd Influence (Literary, artistic, etc.) fast Relativity (Physics) fast Travel fast Relativity (Physics) Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 gnd rswk-swf Relativitätstheorie (DE-588)4049363-5 gnd rswk-swf China (DE-588)4009937-4 gnd rswk-swf Einstein, Albert 1879-1955 (DE-588)118529579 p Relativitätstheorie (DE-588)4049363-5 s Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 s China (DE-588)4009937-4 g Geschichte 1917-1979 z 1\p DE-604 https://doi.org/10.4159/9780674038882 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
