Topics including distillation, recrystallisation, chromatography, elemental analysis, atomic absorption spectroscopy and mass spectrometry are discussed, and are illustrated on video on the accompanying CD-ROMs. Infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy are covered entirely through multi-media, with animations and virtual experiments. The reader is provided with examples for interpretation, and can draw in the structures using the software provided. There is also a set of interactive self-assessment questions. In all, the multi-media software suite comprises more than twelve hours of material. Separation, Purification and Identification concludes with a Case Study on Forensic Science, in which illustrations of criminal cases where spectroscopic techniques provided evidence are given.
