Its focal point is the Dutch jurist Hugo Grotius (1583-1645), who developed his rights and contract theories for the benefit of the United Dutch East India Company or VOC. The monograph reconstructs the immediate historical context of his political thought, as conceptualized in his early manuscript De Jure Praedae/On the Law of Prize and Booty and Mare Liberum/The Free Sea (1609). It argues that Grotius' justification of Dutch interloping in the colonial empires of Spain and Portugal made possible the VOC's rise to power in the Malay Archipelago, which resulted in the slow, but steady, loss of selfdetermination on the part of the inhabitants of the Spice Islands |

Digital master created according to Benchmark for Faithful Digital Reproductions of Monographs and Serials, Version 1. Digital Library Federation, December 2002 Includes bibliographical references (p. [493]-510) and indexes Jacob van Heemskerck's capture of the Santa Catarina and its justification in De Jure Praedae (1604-1606) -- Hugo Grotius and the Spanish black legend: humanist historiography and moral philosophy in De Jure Praedae --Why was De Jure Praedae written? -- Hugo Grotius and the peace negotiations between Spain and the United Provinces, 1607-1608 -- Hugo Grotius and the truce negotiations between Spain and the United Provinces, 1608-1609 -- VOC spokesman and lobbyist during the Twelve Years' Truce This monograph is a study of the interaction of politics and political theory in The Netherlands and Asia in the early seventeenth century. It argues that Grotius' justification of Dutch interloping in the colonial empires of Spain and Portugal made possible the VOC's rise to power in the Malay Archipelago, which resulted in the slow, but steady, loss of selfdetermination on the part of the inhabitants of the Spice Islands Grotius, Hugo swd Grotius, Hugo / 1583-1645 Grotius, Hugo Grotius, Hugo / 1583-1645 fast Grotius, Hugo 1583-1645 Grotius, Hugo 1583-1645 (DE-588)118542702 gnd rswk-swf Vereinigte Ostindische Kompanie swd Nederlandsche Oost-Indische Compagnie East India Company Vereinigte Ostindische Kompanie East India Company fast Nederlandsche Oost-Indische Compagnie fast Nederlandsche Oost-Indische Compagnie History East India Company History Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie (DE-588)672333-0 gnd rswk-swf 1600 - 1699 fast Geschichte 1600-1700 LAW / International bisacsh Natuurrecht gtt Politieke filosofie gtt Overzeese expansie gtt Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie gtt Machtpolitik swd Wirtschaftspolitik swd Grundrecht swd Commerce fast Imperialism fast International law fast International relations fast Natural law fast Geschichte Internationale Politik Internationales Recht Politische Philosophie Natural law International law History 17th century International relations Imperialism Grundrecht (DE-588)4022344-9 gnd rswk-swf Wirtschaftspolitik (DE-588)4066493-4 gnd rswk-swf Machtpolitik (DE-588)4168427-8 gnd rswk-swf Grotius, Hugo 1583-1645 (DE-588)118542702 p Verenigde Oostindische Compagnie (DE-588)672333-0 b Machtpolitik (DE-588)4168427-8 s Wirtschaftspolitik (DE-588)4066493-4 s Grundrecht (DE-588)4022344-9 s 1\p DE-604 Grotius, Hugo Sonstige oth Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe 9789004149793 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=202799 Aggregator Volltext https://doi.org/10.1163/9789047408949 Verlag URL des Erstveröffentlichers Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
