Beschreibung: | Includes bibliographical references Foreword to the English version; Foreword; Section A; Section B. "Many people know the stories behind the tulip mania in the 17th century and the legacy of the Dutch East India Company, but what basic knowledge of Dutch history and culture should be passed on to future generations? A Key to Dutch History and its resulting overview of historical highlights, assembled by a number of specialists in consultation with the Dutch general public, provides a thought-provoking and timely answer. The democratic process behind the volume is reminiscent of the way in which the Netherlands has succeeded for centuries at collective craftsmanship, and says as much about the Netherlands as does the outcome of the opinions voiced. The Cultural Canon of the Netherlands consists of a list of fifty topics from Dutch culture and history, varying from the megalithic tombs in the province of Drenthe and Willem of Orange to the Dutch constitution and the vast natural gas field in the province of Groningen. These fifty topics act as a framework for understanding and even studying Dutch culture and history. The canon should lead to further understanding and deepening of our knowledge of our past and act as an inspirational source for pupils, students and the public at large"--Publisher's description Section A. - Summary -- - ch. 1 - Canon - the pros and cons: Grounds, assignment, analysis, points of departure -- - Administrative grounds -- - The desire for a canon -- - The canon under fire -- - Intermezzo: Canons in Denmark -- - The power of the canon -- - ch. 2 - The canon outlined: Basis, content and form -- - Basis -- - Primary education sector -- - Aside on the local canon -- - Secondary education sector -- - Content -- - Form -- - Wall chart -- - (Virtual) treasure chest (for the time being) -- - Website -- - The canon as a "wiki" -- - ch. 3 - The canon in practice: Implementation in schools and society -- - The canon in the classroom -- - Primary education sector -- - History -- - Geography -- - Dutch language -- - The arts -- - Man and society -- - The local canon in primary schools -- - Secondary education sector -- - LOWER FORMS -- - History -- - Geography -- - Dutch language -- - Art & culture -- - UPPER FORMS AND SECOND STAGE -- - Dutch language -- - Culture and the arts (CKV) -- - Social studies -- - Higher education -- - Teachers and their "baggage" -- - Refresher courses -- - Cultural institutions -- - Collaboration with schools -- - Cultural institutions and the canon -- - Market and society -- - Market -- - Society -- - Willem van Oranje Fund -- - ch. 4 - The canon in revision: Periodical maintenance of the canon -- - The ever-changing canon -- - Concrete procedures -- - ch. 5 - The canon in position: Recommendations and desiderata (including: at what price the canon?) -- - Recommendations -- - With regard to the report -- - With regard to the design -- - The education sector -- - Provinces and municipalities -- - Cultural institutions -- - Market and society -- - With regard to the process -- - Closing remarks -- - Literature -- - Appendice 1 - Letter of instruction -- - Appendice 2 - Composition of committee and description of working methods -- - Appendice 3 - Discussion partners and experts -- - Abbreviations -- - Section B. - Introduction -- - The canon of the Netherlands -- - Main lines of the canon -- - Acknowledgements |
