For more than 50 years, it has been regarded as a morality tale for the possible future of modern society, a future involving nothing less than extinction of humanity itself. Does nineteeFour remainourremain relevant in our new century? The editors of this book assembled a distinguished group of philosophers, literary specialists, political commentators, historians, and lawyers and asked them to take a wide-ranging and uninhibited look at that question. The editors deliberately avoided Orwell scholars in an effort to call forth a fresh and diverse range of responses to the major work of one of the most durable literary figures among twentieth-century EAs nineteenters. AsNineteen Eighty-Fourprotagonist Winston Smith has admirers on the right, in the center, and on the left, the contributors similarly represent a wide range of political, literary, and moral viewpoints. The Cold War that has so often been linked to Orwell's novel ended with more of a whimper than a bang, but most of the issues of concern to him remain alive in some form today: censorship, scientific surveillance, power worship, the autonomy of art, the meaning of democracy, relations between men and women, and many others. The contributors bring a variety of insightful and contemporary perspectives to bear on these questions |

Nussbaum George Orwell's nineteen Eighty-Fours among the most widely read books in the world. The contributors bring a variety of insightful and contemporary perspectives to bear on these questions Orwell, George swd Orwell, George 1903-1950 Nineteen eighty-four Orwell, George 1903-1950 Nineteen eighty-four (DE-588)4099325-5 gnd rswk-swf Orwell, George 1903-1950 (DE-588)118590359 gnd rswk-swf Nineteen eighty-four (DE-588)4295243-8 gnd rswk-swf 1903-1950 History and criticism Nineteen eighty-four Orwell, George Science fiction, English Literature LITERARY CRITICISM / European / English, Irish, Scottish, Welsh bisacsh Nineteen eighty-four (Orwell, George) fast Dystopias in literature fast Science fiction, English fast Science fiction gtt Nineteen eighty-four (Orwell) gtt Toekomstverwachtingen gtt Dystopie gtt Letterkunde gtt Nineteen eighty-four swd Literatur Science fiction, English History and criticism Dystopias in literature 1\p (DE-588)1071861417 Konferenzschrift 1999 Chicago Ill. gnd-content 2\p (DE-588)1071861417 Konferenzschrift 1999 Chicago, Ill. gnd-content Orwell, George 1903-1950 (DE-588)118590359 p Nineteen eighty-four (DE-588)4295243-8 u 3\p DE-604 Orwell, George 1903-1950 Nineteen eighty-four (DE-588)4099325-5 u 4\p DE-604 Gleason, Abbott Sonstige (DE-588)132798506 oth Goldsmith, Jack L. 1962- Sonstige (DE-588)133759504 oth Nussbaum, Martha Craven 1947- Sonstige (DE-588)119546213 oth Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 0-691-11360-2 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 0-691-11361-0 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-691-11360-9 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-691-11361-6 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=329796 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
