Beschreibung: | This volume was spawned by a symposium held in St. Louis in June 1996 Includes bibliographical references and indexes The evolutionary genetics of maternal effects / Michael J. Wade -- The influence of direct and indirect genetic effects on the evolution of behavior: social and sexual selection meet maternal effects / Allen J. Moore, Jason B. Wolf, and Edmund D. Brodie III -- Inertial growth: population dynamics based on maternal effects / Lev. R. Ginzburg -- What is an adaptive environmentally induced parental effect? / Elizabeth P. Lacey -- Oviposition decisions as maternal effects: conundrums and opportunities for conservation biologists / Bernard D. Roitberg -- The detection and measurement of maternal effects / Derek A. Roff -- Genetics of maternal and paternal effects / Ruth G. Shaw & Diane L. Byers The role of environmental variation in parental effects expression / MaryCarol Rossiter -- Maternal environmental effects in plants: adaptive plasticity? / Kathleen Donohue & Johanna Schmitt -- Maternal effects as adaptations for transgenerational phenotypic plasticity in insects / Charles W. Fox & Timothy A. Mousseau -- Are maternal effects in fish adaptive or merely physiological side effects? / Daniel D. Heath & D. Max Blouw -- Maternal and paternal effects in birds: effects on offspring fitness / Trevor Price -- Maternal influences on larval competition in insects / Frank J. Messina Maternal effects, developmental plasticity, and life history evolution: an amphibian model / Robert H. Kaplan -- Perinatal influences on the reproductive behavior of adult rodents / Mertice M. Clark & Bennett G. Galef, Jr. -- Maternal control of fly diapause / David L. Denlinger -- Adaptation of maternal effects in the wild: path analysis of natural variation and experimental tests of causation / Barry Sinervo -- Maternal effects and the maintenance of environmental sex determination / Willem M. Roosenburg & Peter Niewiarowski -- Density-mediated maternal effects on seed size in wild radish: genetic variation and its evolutionary implications / Susan J. Mazer & Lorne M. Wolfe Phenotypic variation is influenced by both genetic and environmental variation. One important source of environmental variation is the maternal effect: influences of the maternal environment on offspring phenotype. Heritable maternal effects have been shown to influence the life histories, behaviour, and population dynamics of a wide variety of plants and animals. They are likely to have evolved as a mechanism for cueing offspring to appropriate development for predicted environmental conditions. This will be the first book dealing with the broad range of maternal effects |
