Yet, as Philip Nord reveals, the significant process of state rebuilding did not begin at the Liberation. Rather, it got started earlier, in the waning years of the Third Republic and under the Vichy regime. Tracking the nation's evolution from the 1930s through the postwar years, Nord describes how a variety of political actors--socialists, Christian democrats, technocrats, and Gaullists--had a hand in the construction of modern France. Nord examines the French development of economic planning and a cradle-to-grave social security system; and he explores the nationalization of radio, the creation of a national cinema, and the funding of regional theaters. Nord shows that many of the policymakers of the Liberation era had also served under the Vichy regime, and that a number of postwar institutions and policies were actually holdovers from the Vichy era--minus the authoritarianism and racism of those years. From this perspective, the French state after the war was neither entirely new nor purely social-democratic in inspiration. The state's complex political pedigree appealed to a range of constituencies and made possible the building of a wide base of support that remained in place for decades to come |

Verfasser aut France's New Deal from the thirties to the postwar era Philip Nord From the thirties to the postwar era Princeton Princeton University Press ©2010 1 Online-Ressource (xiii, 457 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references and index Part I. The French model -- The crisis of the thirties -- The war years -- The Liberation moment -- Part II. A culture of quality -- Art and commerce in the interwar decades -- Culture in wartime -- The culture state France's New Deal is an in-depth and important look at the remaking of the French state after World War II, a time when the nation was endowed with brand-new institutions for managing its economy and culture. The state's complex political pedigree appealed to a range of constituencies and made possible the building of a wide base of support that remained in place for decades to come German Occupation of France / (1940-1945) fast 1900 - 1999 fast Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1930-1955 gnd rswk-swf HISTORY. bisacsh HISTORY / Europe / France bisacsh Arts, French fast Cultural policy fast Economic development fast Political culture fast Political science fast Social change fast Geschichte Politische Wissenschaft Wirtschaftsentwicklung Social change France History 20th century Economic development France History 20th century Political culture France History 20th century Arts, French 20th century Politischer Wandel (DE-588)4175047-0 gnd rswk-swf Kultur (DE-588)4125698-0 gnd rswk-swf Politische Führung (DE-588)4115584-1 gnd rswk-swf Politische Krise (DE-588)4046539-1 gnd rswk-swf Europa Frankreich Frankreich (DE-588)4018145-5 gnd rswk-swf Frankreich (DE-588)4018145-5 g Politische Krise (DE-588)4046539-1 s Kultur (DE-588)4125698-0 s Geschichte 1930-1955 z 1\p DE-604 Politische Führung (DE-588)4115584-1 s Politischer Wandel (DE-588)4175047-0 s 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 0-691-14297-1 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-691-14297-5 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-691-15611-8 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=321439 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
