Carter examines the divided American political character on dissent, with special reference to religion, identifying it in unexpected places, with an eye toward amending it before it destroys our democracy. At the heart of this work is a rereading of the Declaration of Independence that puts dissent, not consent, at the center of the question of the legitimacy of democratic government. Carter warns that our liberal constitutional ethos - the tendency to assume that the nation must everywhere be morally the same - pressures citizens to be other than themselves when being themselves would lead to disobedience. This tendency, he argues, is particularly hard on religious citizens whose notion of community may be quite different from that of the sovereign majority of citizens. With reference to a number of cases, Carter shows that disobedience is sometimes necessary to the heartbeat of our democracy - and that the distinction between challenging accepted norms and challenging the sovereign itself, a distinction crucial to the Declaration of Independence, must be kept alive if we are to progress and prosper as a nation |

Digital Library Federation, December 2002 Includes bibliographical references (pages 149-157) and index The Dissent of the Governed is a diagnosis of what ails the body politic - the unwillingness of people in power to hear disagreement unless forced to - and a prescription for a new process of response. With reference to a number of cases, Carter shows that disobedience is sometimes necessary to the heartbeat of our democracy - and that the distinction between challenging accepted norms and challenging the sovereign itself, a distinction crucial to the Declaration of Independence, must be kept alive if we are to progress and prosper as a nation POLITICAL SCIENCE / Political Freedom & Security / Civil Rights bisacsh POLITICAL SCIENCE / Political Freedom & Security / Human Rights bisacsh Staat (politicologie) gtt Gezag gtt Burgerrechten gtt Burgerlijke ongehoorzaamheid gtt Religieuze aspecten gtt Juridische aspecten gtt Resistance au gouvernement / Etats-Unis ram Allégeance / Etats-Unis ram Religion et Etat / Etats-Unis ram Allegiance fast Government, Resistance to fast Religion and politics fast Allegiance Government, Resistance to Religion and politics Widerstand (DE-588)4079262-6 gnd rswk-swf Politische Kultur (DE-588)4046540-8 gnd rswk-swf Regierung (DE-588)4049012-9 gnd rswk-swf Loyalität (DE-588)4168194-0 gnd rswk-swf Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 gnd rswk-swf Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Loyalität (DE-588)4168194-0 s Widerstand (DE-588)4079262-6 s 1\p DE-604 Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 s Politik (DE-588)4046514-7 s 2\p DE-604 Politische Kultur (DE-588)4046540-8 s 3\p DE-604 Regierung (DE-588)4049012-9 s 4\p DE-604 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=282839 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
