Beschreibung: | Includes bibliographical references (p. [487]-503) and index Catherine Marshall was a vital figure in the women's suffrage movement in Britain before the First World War. By 1913 she was uniquely placed as a lobbyist, with inside information and sympathetic listeners in every party. Through her the dynamically reorganized National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies (NUWSS) brought the women's suffrage issue to the fore of public awareness. It pushed the Labour Party to adopt a strong stand on women's suffrage and raised working-class consciousness, reawakening a long-dormant demand for full adult enfranchisement. Had the general election due in 1915 taken place, financial and organizational support for the Labour Party from NUWSS might well have been substantial enough to influence the final results. These impressive achievements were forgotten by the time Catherine Marshall died in 1962. Even recent research on the period has failed to show the full significance of the issue of women's suffrage, much less Marshall's part in the movement. Jo Vellacott's revealing account of Marshall's political work also includes vivid descriptions of her liberal Victorian childhood and strangely purposeless young adulthood, and the heady experiences of women who, through the awakening of political consciousness, forged a lifestyle to fit their new aspirations |

spelling | Vellacott, Jo Verfasser aut From Liberal to Labour with women's suffrage the story of Catherine Marshall Jo Vellacott Montreal [Que.] McGill-Queen's University Press c1993 1 Online-Ressource (xx, 518 p., [6] p. of plates) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references (p. Jo Vellacott's revealing account of Marshall's political work also includes vivid descriptions of her liberal Victorian childhood and strangely purposeless young adulthood, and the heady experiences of women who, through the awakening of political consciousness, forged a lifestyle to fit their new aspirations Marshall, Catherine / née 1880 Marshall, Catherine / (1946-....) ram Marshall, Catherine swd Marshall, Catherine / 1880- fast Marshall, Catherine 1880- Marshall, Catherine 1914-1983 (DE-588)118578146 gnd rswk-swf Liberal Party (Grande-Bretagne) / Histoire Labour Party (Grande-Bretagne) / Histoire Labour Party (Great Britain) fast Liberal Party (Great Britain) fast Liberal Party (Great Britain) History Labour Party (Great Britain) History 1901 - 1936 fast Geschichte 1907-1914 gnd rswk-swf Suffragists / Great Britain Femmes / Suffrage / Grande-Bretagne / Histoire Suffragettes / Grande-Bretagne / Biographies Femmes / Droit de vote / Grande-Bretagne / Histoire ram Suffragettes / Grande-Bretagne / Biographies ram Biographie swd Frauenwahlrecht swd Geschichte (1907-1914) swd BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY / Political bisacsh POLITICAL SCIENCE / Political Freedom & Security / Civil Rights bisacsh POLITICAL SCIENCE / Political Freedom & Security / Human Rights bisacsh Political science fast Suffragists fast Women / Suffrage fast Frau Geschichte Politische Wissenschaft Women Suffrage Great Britain History Suffragists Great Britain Biography Frauenwahlrecht (DE-588)4071434-2 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)4006804-3 Biografie gnd-content Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Frauenwahlrecht (DE-588)4071434-2 s Geschichte 1907-1914 z 1\p DE-604 Marshall, Catherine 1914-1983 (DE-588)118578146 p 2\p DE-604 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=627015 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
