Yet while Anne Frank's story continues to be discussed and analyzed, her experience as a hidden child in wartime Holland is anomalous-as this book brilliantly demonstrates. Drawing on interviews with seventy Jewish men and women who, as children, were placed in non-Jewish families during the Nazi occupation of Holland, Diane L. Wolf paints a compelling portrait of Holocaust survivors whose experiences were often diametrically opposed to the experiences of those who suffered in concentration camps. Although the war years were tolerable for most of these children, it was the end of the war that marked the beginning of a traumatic time, leading many of those interviewed here to remark, "My war began after the war." This first in-depth examination of hidden children vividly brings to life their experiences before, during, and after hiding and analyzes the shifting identities, memories, and family dynamics that marked their lives from childhood through advanced age. Wolf also uncovers anti-Semitism in the policies and practices of the Dutch state and the general population, which historically have been portrayed as relatively benevolent toward Jewish residents. The poignant family histories in Beyond Anne Frank demonstrate that we can understand the Holocaust more deeply by focusing on postwar lives."-- |

Wolf Berkeley University of California Press c2007 1 Online-Ressource (xiii, 391 p., [12] p. of plates) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier S. Mark Taper Foundation imprint in Jewish studies Includes bibliographical references (p. 365-380) and index The history and memory of hidden children -- Before and during the war : the Netherlands and the Jews -- After the war : the Jews and the Netherlands -- "My mother screamed and screamed" : memories of occupation, war, and hiding -- "I came home, but I was homesick" : when both parents returned -- "They were out of their minds" : when one parent returned -- "Who am I?": orphans living with families -- "There was never a kind word" : life in Jewish orphanages -- Creating postwar lives, creating collective memory: from the personal to the political "The image of the Jewish child hiding from the Nazis was shaped by Anne Frank, whose house-the most visited site in the Netherlands- has become a shrine to the Holocaust. The poignant family histories in Beyond Anne Frank demonstrate that we can understand the Holocaust more deeply by focusing on postwar lives."-- Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) fast 1939 - 1945 fast HISTORY / Holocaust bisacsh RELIGION / Judaism / General bisacsh Ethnic relations fast Hidden children (Holocaust) fast Holocaust survivors fast Jews / Persecutions fast Juden Judentum Judenvernichtung Jews Persecutions Netherlands Hidden children (Holocaust) Netherlands Holocaust, Jewish (1939-1945) Netherlands Holocaust survivors Netherlands Rettung (DE-588)4231103-2 gnd rswk-swf Judenverfolgung (DE-588)4028814-6 gnd rswk-swf Versteck (DE-588)4188038-9 gnd rswk-swf Judenvernichtung (DE-588)4073091-8 gnd rswk-swf Kind (DE-588)4030550-8 gnd rswk-swf Pflegefamilie (DE-588)4137808-8 gnd rswk-swf Familie (DE-588)4016397-0 gnd rswk-swf Überlebender (DE-588)4136796-0 gnd rswk-swf Niederlande Niederlande (DE-588)4042203-3 gnd rswk-swf Niederlande (DE-588)4042203-3 g Judenvernichtung (DE-588)4073091-8 s Kind (DE-588)4030550-8 s Versteck (DE-588)4188038-9 s Pflegefamilie (DE-588)4137808-8 s 1\p DE-604 Judenverfolgung (DE-588)4028814-6 s Rettung (DE-588)4231103-2 s 2\p DE-604 Überlebender (DE-588)4136796-0 s Familie (DE-588)4016397-0 s 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 0-520-22617-8 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 0-520-24810-4 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-0-520-22617-3 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-520-24810-6 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=184435 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
