Indians retained control over most of the lands in Spain's American empire. Mounted on horseback, savvy about European ways and often possessing firearms, independent Indians continued to find new ways to resist subjugation by Spanish soldiers and conversion by Spanish missionaries. In this panoramic study, David Weber explains how late eighteenth-century Spanish administrators tried to fashion a more enlightened policy toward the people they called barbaros, or 'savages'. Even Spain's most powerful monarchs failed, however, to enforce a consistent, well-reasoned policy toward Indians. At one extreme, powerful independent Indians forced Spaniards to seek peace, acknowledge autonomous tribal governments and recognise the existence of tribal lands, fulfilling the Crown's oft-stated wish to use 'gentle' means in dealing with Indians. At the other extreme the Crown abandoned its principles, authorising bloody wars on Indians when Spanish officers believed they could defeat them. Power, says Weber, more than the power of ideas, determined how Spaniards treated 'savages' in the Age of Enlightenment |

Weber New Haven Yale University Press c2005 1 Online-Ressource (xviii, 466 p.) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references (p. 371-440) and index Introduction -- Savants, savages, and new sensibilities -- Savages and Spaniards: natives transformed -- The science of creating men -- A good war or a bad peace? -- Trading, gifting, and treating -- Crossing borders -- Epilogue: Insurgents and savages, from inclusion to exclusion Two centuries after Cortes and Pizarro seized the Aztec and Inca empires, Spain's conquest of America remained unfinished. Power, says Weber, more than the power of ideas, determined how Spaniards treated 'savages' in the Age of Enlightenment Geschichte 1770-1810 gnd rswk-swf Indiens d'Amérique / Colonisation Indiens d'Amérique / Missions Indiens d'Amérique / Relations avec l'État POLITICAL SCIENCE / Political Freedom & Security / Civil Rights bisacsh POLITICAL SCIENCE / Political Freedom & Security / Human Rights bisacsh HISTORY / Europe / Spain & Portugal bisacsh Indians Colonization Indians Missions Indians Government relations Entdeckung (DE-588)4014841-5 gnd rswk-swf Kolonisation (DE-588)4128651-0 gnd rswk-swf Kolonialismus (DE-588)4073624-6 gnd rswk-swf Indianer (DE-588)4026718-0 gnd rswk-swf Kolonialverwaltung (DE-588)4164715-4 gnd rswk-swf Mission (DE-588)4039567-4 gnd rswk-swf Europa Spanien (DE-588)4055964-6 gnd rswk-swf Hispanoamerika (DE-588)4194079-9 gnd rswk-swf Amerika (DE-588)4001670-5 gnd rswk-swf Amerika (DE-588)4001670-5 g Entdeckung (DE-588)4014841-5 s Spanien (DE-588)4055964-6 g Kolonisation (DE-588)4128651-0 s Indianer (DE-588)4026718-0 s Mission (DE-588)4039567-4 s 1\p DE-604 Kolonialverwaltung (DE-588)4164715-4 s Hispanoamerika (DE-588)4194079-9 g Geschichte 1770-1810 z 2\p DE-604 Kolonialismus (DE-588)4073624-6 s 3\p DE-604 4\p DE-604 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=187697 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
