Conley's Real people series -- Epilogue: building ground in American Indian textual studies Weaving connections between indigenous modes of oral storytelling, visual depiction, and contemporary American Indian literature, Deep Waters demonstrates the continuing relationship between traditional and contemporary Native American systems of creative representation and signification. Christopher B. Teuton begins with a study of Mesoamerican writings, Diné sand paintings, and Haudenosaunee wampum belts. He proposes a theory of how and why indigenous oral and graphic means of recording thought are interdependent, their functions and purposes determined by social, political, and cultural contexts. The center of this book examines four key works of contemporary American Indian literature by N. Scott Momaday, Gerald Vizenor, Ray A. Young Bear, and Robert J. Conley. Through a textually grounded exploration of what Teuton calls the oral impulse, the graphic impulse, and the critical impulse, we see how and why various types of contemporary Native literary production are interrelated and draw upon long-standing indigenous methods of creative representation. Teuton breaks down the disabling binary of orality and literacy, offering readers a cogent, historically informed theory of indigenous textuality that allows for deeper readings of Native American cultural and literary expression |

Includes bibliographical references (pages 225-234) and index Introduction: diving into deep waters -- The oral impulse, the graphic impulse, and the critical impulse: reframing signification in American Indian literary studies -- N. Scott Momaday's The way to Rainy Mountain: vision, textuality, and history -- Trickster leads the way: a reading of Gerald Vizenor's Bearheart: the heirship chronicles -- Transforming "eventuality": the aesthetics of a tribal "word-collector" in Ray A. Young Bear's Black eagle child and Remnants of the first earth -- Interpreting our world: authority and the written word in Robert J. Teuton breaks down the disabling binary of orality and literacy, offering readers a cogent, historically informed theory of indigenous textuality that allows for deeper readings of Native American cultural and literary expression Vizenor, Gerald Robert 1934- (DE-588)119171457 gnd rswk-swf Momaday, Navarre Scott 1934-2024 (DE-588)118811681 gnd rswk-swf Young Bear, Ray A. 1950- (DE-588)143371665 gnd rswk-swf Conley, Robert J. 1940-2014 (DE-588)114138818 gnd rswk-swf American literature History and criticism Indian authors Indian philosophy Indians of North America Intellectual life United States Literature LITERARY CRITICISM / American / General bisacsh Indianen gtt Mondelinge literatuur gtt Bellettrie gtt Indianer Literatur American literature Indian authors History and criticism Indians in literature Oral tradition in literature Vision in literature Indian philosophy United States Indians of North America Intellectual life Bildliche Darstellung (DE-588)4145419-4 gnd rswk-swf Mündliche Überlieferung (DE-588)4040600-3 gnd rswk-swf Indianer (DE-588)4026718-0 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf USA Indianer (DE-588)4026718-0 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Mündliche Überlieferung (DE-588)4040600-3 s Bildliche Darstellung (DE-588)4145419-4 s 1\p DE-604 Momaday, Navarre Scott 1934-2024 (DE-588)118811681 p Vizenor, Gerald Robert 1934- (DE-588)119171457 p Young Bear, Ray A. 1950- (DE-588)143371665 p Conley, Robert J. 1940-2014 (DE-588)114138818 p 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 0-8032-2849-X Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-0-8032-2849-8 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=354611 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
