Through rigorous readings of a series of antebellum plantation novels, Susan J. Tracy shows how the narrative strategies employed by proslavery Southern writers served to justify and perpetuate the oppression of women, blacks, and poor whites Tracy focuses on the historical romances of six authors: George Tucker, James Ewell Heath, William Alexander Caruthers, John Pendleton Kennedy, Nathaniel Beverley Tucker, and William Gilmore Simms. Using variations on a recurring plot - in which a young planter/hero rescues a planter's daughter from an "enemy" of her class - each of these novelists reinforced an idealized vision of a Southern civilization based on male superiority, white supremacy, and class inequality. It is a world in which white men are represented as the natural leaders of loyal and dependent women, grateful and docile slaves, and inferior poor whites. According to Tracy, the interweaving of these themes reveals the extent to which the Southern defense of slavery in the years leading up to the Civil War was an argument not only about race relations but about gender and class relations as well The antebellum South -- The production of Southern literature -- The form of Southern literature -- The genesis of the "Plantation novel" -- Representing Southern women's lives -- Unmarried women: the "Belle," passive sufferer versus spirited woman -- Unmarried women: the "Spinster" and the "Fallen woman" -- Married woman: mothers -- Widows -- Slavery: the "Patriarchal" institution -- The master-slave relationship: individual portraits of slaves -- The problem of class in Southern society and Southern literature -- Representations of poor whites -- The problem of the yeoman farmer |

University of Massachusetts Press ©1995 1 Online-Ressource (ix, 307 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Master and use copy. Digital master created according to Benchmark for Faithful Digital Reproductions of Monographs and Serials, Version 1. Digital Library Federation, December 2002 Includes bibliographical references (pages 273-296) and index This book explores the way in which literature can be used to reinforce social power. According to Tracy, the interweaving of these themes reveals the extent to which the Southern defense of slavery in the years leading up to the Civil War was an argument not only about race relations but about gender and class relations as well The antebellum South -- The production of Southern literature -- The form of Southern literature -- The genesis of the "Plantation novel" -- Representing Southern women's lives -- Unmarried women: the "Belle," passive sufferer versus spirited woman -- Unmarried women: the "Spinster" and the "Fallen woman" -- Married woman: mothers -- Widows -- Slavery: the "Patriarchal" institution -- The master-slave relationship: individual portraits of slaves -- The problem of class in Southern society and Southern literature -- Representations of poor whites -- The problem of the yeoman farmer 1800 - 1899 fast Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1800-1861 gnd rswk-swf Littérature américaine / États-Unis (Sud) / Histoire et critique Littérature et société / États-Unis (Sud) / Histoire / 19e siècle Femmes et littérature / États-Unis (Sud) / Histoire / 19e siècle Littérature américaine / 19e siècle / Histoire et critique Écrits d'hommes américains / Histoire et critique Blancs de la classe ouvrière dans la littérature Noirs américains dans la littérature Classes sociales dans la littérature Patriarcat dans la littérature Pauvres dans la littérature États-Unis (Sud) dans la littérature LITERARY CRITICISM / American / General bisacsh African Americans in literature fast American literature fast American literature / Male authors fast Literature fast Literature and society fast Patriarchy in literature fast Poor in literature fast Social classes in literature fast Women and literature fast Working class whites in literature fast Geschichte Literatur American literature Southern States History and criticism Literature and society Southern States History 19th century Women and literature Southern States History 19th century American literature 19th century History and criticism American literature Male authors History and criticism Working class whites in literature African Americans in literature Social classes in literature Patriarchy in literature Poor in literature Schwarze Motiv (DE-588)4116434-9 gnd rswk-swf Armut (DE-588)4002963-3 gnd rswk-swf Frau (DE-588)4018202-2 gnd rswk-swf Armut Motiv (DE-588)4265691-6 gnd rswk-swf Weiße Motiv (DE-588)4140565-1 gnd rswk-swf Schwarze (DE-588)4116433-7 gnd rswk-swf Frau Motiv (DE-588)4113617-2 gnd rswk-swf Weiße (DE-588)4132038-4 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf USA Südstaaten (DE-588)4078674-2 gnd rswk-swf USA Südstaaten (DE-588)4078674-2 g Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Armut (DE-588)4002963-3 s Weiße (DE-588)4132038-4 s Geschichte 1800-1861 z 1\p DE-604 Armut Motiv (DE-588)4265691-6 s Weiße Motiv (DE-588)4140565-1 s 2\p DE-604 Frau Motiv (DE-588)4113617-2 s 3\p DE-604 Schwarze (DE-588)4116433-7 s 4\p DE-604 Schwarze Motiv (DE-588)4116434-9 s 5\p DE-604 Frau (DE-588)4018202-2 s 6\p DE-604 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=22380 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
