Theory, experiment, and cathode rays This volume brings together six published and two new essays by the noted philosopher of science, Peter Achinstein. It represents the culmination of his examination of methodological issues that arise in nineteenth-century physics. He focuses on the philosophical problem of how, if at all, it is possible to confirm scientific hypotheses that postulate 'unobservables' such as light waves, molecules, and electrons. This question is one that not only was of great interest to nineteenth-century physicists and methodologists, but continues to occupy philosophers of science up to the present day. The essays in this volume deal with this vexing problem as it arose in actual scientific practice in three nineteenth-century episodes: the debate between particle and wave theorists of light, Maxwell's kinetic theory of gases, and J.J. Thomson's discovery of the electron. Achinstein shows that the most important issue raised by these three cases concerns the legitimacy of introducing hypotheses that invoke "unobservables". If science is to be empirical, can such hypotheses be employed? How, if at all, is it possible to confirm them?; Achinstein here assesses the philosophical validity of nineteenth-century and modern answers to these questions and presents and defends his own solutions |

How, if at all, is it possible to confirm them?; Achinstein here assesses the philosophical validity of nineteenth-century and modern answers to these questions and presents and defends his own solutions Sciences / Philosophie / Histoire Physique / Histoire Dualité onde-corpuscule / Histoire SCIENCE / Philosophy & Social Aspects bisacsh Physics / Methodology fast Science / Philosophy fast Wave-particle duality fast Deeltjesmechanica gtt Golfbewegingsenergie gtt Philosophie swd Physik swd Welle-Teilchen-Dualismus swd Geschichte Naturwissenschaft Philosophie Science Philosophy History Physics Methodology History Wave-particle duality History Kinetische Gastheorie (DE-588)4163881-5 gnd rswk-swf Physik (DE-588)4045956-1 gnd rswk-swf Welle-Teilchen-Dualismus (DE-588)4189560-5 gnd rswk-swf Philosophie (DE-588)4045791-6 gnd rswk-swf Kathode (DE-588)4163451-2 gnd rswk-swf Elektronenstrahl (DE-588)4151894-9 gnd rswk-swf Elektronenstrahl (DE-588)4151894-9 s Kathode (DE-588)4163451-2 s Physik (DE-588)4045956-1 s Philosophie (DE-588)4045791-6 s 1\p DE-604 Welle-Teilchen-Dualismus (DE-588)4189560-5 s 2\p DE-604 Kinetische Gastheorie (DE-588)4163881-5 s 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 0-19-506547-6 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 0-19-506755-X Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-0-19-506547-3 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-19-506755-2 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=288532 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
