[259]-279) and index Publisher's description: Historians of the Cold War, argues William Hitchcock, have too often overlooked the part that European nations played in shaping the post-World War II international system. In particular, France, a country beset by economic difficulties and political instability in the aftermath of the war, has been given short shrift. With this book, Hitchcock restores France to the narrative of Cold War history and illuminates its central role in the reconstruction of Europe. Drawing on a wide array of evidence from French, American, and British archives, he shows that France constructed a coherent national strategy for domestic and international recovery and pursued that strategy with tenacity and effectiveness in the first postwar decade. This once-occupied nation played a vital part in the occupation and administration of Germany, framed the key institutions of the "new" Europe, helped forge the NATO alliance, and engineered an astonishing economic recovery. In the process, France successfully contested American leadership in Europe and used its position as a key Cold War ally to extract concessions from Washington on a wide range of economic and security issues |

In the process, France successfully contested American leadership in Europe and used its position as a key Cold War ally to extract concessions from Washington on a wide range of economic and security issues Reconstruction / (1939-1951) fast Since 1939 fast Geschichte 1944-1954 gnd rswk-swf POLITICAL SCIENCE / Government / International bisacsh POLITICAL SCIENCE / International Relations / General bisacsh Diplomatic relations fast Peaceful change (International relations) fast Political leadership fast World politics fast Buitenlandse politiek gtt Europese integratie gtt Wederopbouw gtt 1945-1949 rasuqam 1950-1959 rasuqam Guerre froide rasuqam Leadership politique rasuqam Transformation pacifique (Relations internationales) rasuqam Politique mondiale rasuqam Politique étrangère rasuqam Reconstruction d'après-guerre rasuqam Außenpolitik Diplomatische Beziehungen Europäische Integration Reconstruction (1939-1951) France Political leadership France World politics 1945-1955 Peaceful change (International relations) Außenpolitik (DE-588)4003846-4 gnd rswk-swf Ost-West-Konflikt (DE-588)4075770-5 gnd rswk-swf Frankreich Frankreich (DE-588)4018145-5 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 gnd rswk-swf Frankreich (DE-588)4018145-5 g Außenpolitik (DE-588)4003846-4 s Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 g Geschichte 1944-1954 z 1\p DE-604 Ost-West-Konflikt (DE-588)4075770-5 s 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 0-8078-2428-3 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 0-8078-4747-X Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-8078-2428-3 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-8078-4747-3 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=47799 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
