Princeton University Press c1992 1 Online-Ressource (xiii, 378 p.) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references (p. [345]-368) and index What determines the strategies by which a state mobilizes resources for war? And does war preparation strengthen or weaken the state in relation to society? In looking at these questions, Michael Barnett develops a novel theoretical framework that traces the connection between war preparation and changes in state-society relations, and applies that framework to Egypt from 1952 to 1977 and Israel from 1948 through 1977. Confronting the Costs of War addresses major issues in international relations, comparative politics, and Middle Eastern studies. The author argues that Egyptian and Israeli war preparation strategies were a function of systemic, state, and societal variables, and that leaders in each state attempted to balance the demands imposed by international conflict with their domestic economic and political objectives. Before 1967 the governments' strategies led to the expansion of state control over society. But contrary to the prevailing wisdom that war and war preparation will generally strengthen the state, the increased security pressures after 1967 were central to the decline of state power in both countries. After that year, Israeli and Egyptian officials ventured on a path that bolstered the state's military preparedness, but at the cost of its control over society and economy War Preparation and State Power -- - The Framework -- - Preferences and Constraints -- - State Strategies for War Preparation -- - The Conservation and Transformation of State Power -- - An Excursion on State Power -- - Egypt and Israel in Historical Perspective -- - Egypt -- - Israel -- - Explaining Egyptian War Preparation Strategies -- - Consolidation and Intent, 1952-1956 -- - From the Suez War to the 1967 War -- - Defeat, Consolidation, and Redemption, 1967-1973 -- - From Victory to Self-Defeat, 1973-1977 -- - Explaining Israeli War Preparation Strategies -- - Mobilization and Integration, 1948-1956 -- - In the Eye of the Hurricane, 1957-1967 -- - Life during Wartime, 1967-1977 -- - War and the Transformation of State Power -- - Egyptian War Preparation Strategies and State Power -- - Israeli War Preparation Strategies and State Power -- - Egypt and Israel in Comparative and Theoretical Perspective -- - The Construction of the Government's War Preparation Strategies -- - War Preparation and State Power -- - Jewish Investment and Capital Inflow, 1932-1939 -- - National and Public versus Private Jewish Capital Flow to Palestine, 1918-1937 -- - Summary of Fiscal Operations, 1962/63-1978 -- - Soviet-Egyptian Military Aid Accounts -- - Arab Financial Assistance to Egypt, 1973-1976 -- - Capital Imports to Israel, 1950-1967 -- - Share of Capital Imports in Total Resources and Gross Investments, 1950-1967 -- - Investments by Branch in the Economy, 1950-1967 -- - Gross Investment in Fixed Assets, by Investing Sector, 1952-1966 -- - Capital Imports to Israel, 1967-1977 Geschichte (1952-1977) swd Geschichte (1948-1977) swd 1900 - 1999 fast Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1948-1977 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1952-1977 gnd rswk-swf POLITICAL SCIENCE / Political Process / Political Advocacy bisacsh Militärpolitik swd Militär swd Staat swd Gesellschaft swd MILITARY POLICY. unbist CIVIL-MILITARY RELATIONS. unbist EGYPT. unbist ISRAEL. unbist POLITICAL SCIENCE / International Relations / General bisacsh Civil-military relations fast Military policy fast Political science fast Geschichte Politische Wissenschaft Civil-military relations Egypt History 20th century Civil-military relations Israel History 20th century Civil-military relations Militärpolitik (DE-588)4065004-2 gnd rswk-swf Gesellschaft (DE-588)4020588-5 gnd rswk-swf Militär (DE-588)4039305-7 gnd rswk-swf Staat (DE-588)4056618-3 gnd rswk-swf Israel (DE-588)4027808-6 gnd rswk-swf Ägypten (DE-588)4000556-2 gnd rswk-swf Israel (DE-588)4027808-6 g Militär (DE-588)4039305-7 s Gesellschaft (DE-588)4020588-5 s 1\p DE-604 Militärpolitik (DE-588)4065004-2 s Geschichte 1948-1977 z 2\p DE-604 Ägypten (DE-588)4000556-2 g Geschichte 1952-1977 z 3\p DE-604 Staat (DE-588)4056618-3 s 4\p DE-604 5\p DE-604 6\p DE-604 7\p DE-604 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=360053 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 7\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
