Located along the Sino-Soviet border, the Jewish Autonomous Region, popularly known as Birobidzhan, was designated as the national homeland of Soviet Jewry. The creation of Birobidzhan was part of the Kremlin's effort to establish an enclave where secular Jewish culture rooted in the Yiddish language and socialist beliefs could serve as an alternative to Palestine and resolve a variety of perceived problems besetting Soviet Jews. Birobidzhan still exists today, but despite its continued official status Jews represent only a small minority of the inhabitants of the region." "Drawing on documents from archives in Moscow and Birobidzhan, as well as photograph collections never seen outside Birobidzhan, this book explores both the Kremlin's efforts to create a socialist Jewish homeland and the reasons for the failure of the Birobidzhan experiment. The story of the Soviet Zion sheds light on a host of important historical and contemporary issues regarding Jewish identity, community, and culture. The history of Birobidzhan provides an unusual point of entry both to the "Jewish question" in Russia and to an exploration of the fate of Soviet Jewry under Communist rule."--Jacket |

spelling | Weinberg, Robert Verfasser aut Stalin's forgotten Zion Birobidzhan and the making of a Soviet Jewish homeland : an illustrated history, 1928-1996 Robert Weinberg ; with an introduction by Zvi Gitelman ; photographs edited by Bradley Berman Berkeley University of California Press ©1998 1 Online-Ressource (ix, 105 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references (pages 97-98) and index "In 1934 the Soviet government established the Jewish Autonomous Region in a sparsely populated area some five thousand miles east of Moscow. The history of Birobidzhan provides an unusual point of entry both to the "Jewish question" in Russia and to an exploration of the fate of Soviet Jewry under Communist rule."--Jacket Geschichte 1928-1996 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1928-1991 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1991-1996 gnd rswk-swf HISTORY. bisacsh Ethnic relations fast Jews fast Geschichte Juden Jews Russia (Federation) Evreĭskai͡a avtonomnai͡a oblastʹ History Jews Russia (Federation) Birobidzhan History Autonome Region (DE-588)4261178-7 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 gnd rswk-swf Juden (DE-588)4028808-0 gnd rswk-swf Russland (DE-588)4076899-5 gnd rswk-swf Jüdisches Autonomes Gebiet (DE-588)4073096-7 gnd rswk-swf Sowjetunion (DE-588)4077548-3 gnd rswk-swf Sowjetunion (DE-588)4077548-3 g Juden (DE-588)4028808-0 s Autonome Region (DE-588)4261178-7 s Geschichte 1928-1996 z 1\p DE-604 Geschichte 1928-1991 z 2\p DE-604 Russland (DE-588)4076899-5 g Geschichte 1991-1996 z 3\p DE-604 Jüdisches Autonomes Gebiet (DE-588)4073096-7 g 4\p DE-604 Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 s 5\p DE-604 Geschichte z 6\p DE-604 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=21402 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
