Beschreibung: | "A McLellan book." Includes bibliographical references and index "Malvin Gray Johnson, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, and Max Weber were three New York City artists whose work was popularly assigned to the category of "racial art" in the interwar years of the twentieth century. The term was widely used by critics and the public at the time, and was an unexamined, unquestioned category for the work of non-whites (such as Johnson, an African American), non-Westerners (such as Kuniyoshi, a Japanese-born American), and ethnicized non-Christians (such as Weber, a Russian-born Jewish American). The discourse on racial art is a troubling chapter in the history of early American modernism that has not, until now, been sufficiently documented. Jacqueline Francis juxtaposes the work of these three artists in order to consider their understanding of the category and their stylistic responses to the expectations created by it, in the process revealing much about the nature of modernist art practices. Most American audiences in the interwar period disapproved of figural abstraction and held modernist painting in contempt, yet the critics who first expressed appreciation for Johnson, Kuniyoshi, and Weber praised their bright palettes and energetic pictures--and expected to find the residue of the minority artist's heritage in the work itself. Francis explores the flowering of racial art rhetoric in criticism and history published in the 1920s and 1930s, and analyzes its underlying presence in contemporary discussions of artists of color. Making Race is a history of a past phenomenon which has ramifications for the present. Jacqueline Francis is a senior lecturer at the California College of the Arts"--Provided by publisher "A comparative history of New York expressionist painters Malvin Gray Johnson (1896-1934), Yasuo Kuniyoshi (1893-1953), and Max Weber (1881-1961)"--Provided by publisher Introduction -- The meanings of modernism -- Making race in American religious painting -- Type/face/mask: racial portraiture -- The race of landscape -- Conclusion |

spelling | Francis, Jacqueline Verfasser aut Making race modernism and "racial art" in America Jacqueline Francis Seattle University of Washington Press c2012 1 Online-Ressource (xiv, 250 p.) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier "A McLellan book." Includes bibliographical references and index "Malvin Gray Johnson, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, and Max Weber were three New York City artists whose work was popularly assigned to the category of "racial art" in the interwar years of the twentieth century. Jacqueline Francis is a senior lecturer at the California College of the Arts"--Provided by publisher "A comparative history of New York expressionist painters Malvin Gray Johnson (1896-1934), Yasuo Kuniyoshi (1893-1953), and Max Weber (1881-1961)"--Provided by publisher Introduction -- The meanings of modernism -- Making race in American religious painting -- Type/face/mask: racial portraiture -- The race of landscape -- Conclusion Johnson, Malvin Gray / 1896-1934 / Criticism and interpretation / Criticism and interpretation / Criticism and interpretation Kuniyoshi, Yasuo / 1889-1953 / Criticism and interpretation / Criticism and interpretation / Criticism and interpretation Weber, Max / 1881-1961 / Criticism and interpretation / Criticism and interpretation / Criticism and interpretation Johnson, Malvin Gray / 1896-1934 fast Kuniyoshi, Yasuo / 1889-1953 fast Weber, Max / 1881-1961 fast Johnson, Malvin Gray 1896-1934 Criticism and interpretation Kuniyoshi, Yasuo 1889-1953 Criticism and interpretation Weber, Max 1881-1961 Criticism and interpretation Weber, Max 1881-1961 (DE-588)118834010 gnd rswk-swf Johnson, Malvin Gray 1896-1934 (DE-588)1021166162 gnd rswk-swf Kuniyoshi, Yasuo 1889-1953 (DE-588)118725416 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1920-1940 swd 1900 - 1999 fast Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1920-1940 gnd rswk-swf ART / American / African American bisacsh ART / American / Asian American bisacsh SOCIAL SCIENCE / Ethnic Studies / General bisacsh ART / History / General bisacsh Art and race fast Art criticism fast Modernism (Art) fast Painting, American fast Geschichte Modernism (Art) United States Painting, American 20th century Art criticism United States History 20th century Art and race Malerei (DE-588)4037220-0 gnd rswk-swf Künstler (DE-588)4033423-5 gnd rswk-swf Minderheit (DE-588)4752223-9 gnd rswk-swf Ethnizität Motiv (DE-588)4438896-2 gnd rswk-swf USA New York, NY (DE-588)4042011-5 gnd rswk-swf New York, NY (DE-588)4042011-5 g Minderheit (DE-588)4752223-9 s Künstler (DE-588)4033423-5 s Malerei (DE-588)4037220-0 s Ethnizität Motiv (DE-588)4438896-2 s Geschichte 1920-1940 z 1\p DE-604 Johnson, Malvin Gray 1896-1934 (DE-588)1021166162 p Kuniyoshi, Yasuo 1889-1953 (DE-588)118725416 p Weber, Max 1881-1961 (DE-588)118834010 p 2\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 0-295-99145-3 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-295-99145-0 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=421467 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
