Their frequently clashing views turned practically all of American culture - from blackface minstrel shows to the works of William Shakespeare - into a battlefield in the war on insanity. Reiss also shows how asylums touched the lives and shaped the writing of key figures, such as Emerson and Poe, who viewed the system alternately as the fulfillment of a democratic ideal and as a kind of medical enslavement. Without neglecting this troubling contradiction, "Theaters of Madness" prompts us to reflect on what our society can learn from a generation that urgently and creatively tried to solve the problem of mental illness |

Housed in magnificent structures with lush grounds, patients participated in theatrical programs, debating societies, literary journals, schools, and religious services. "Theaters of Madness" explores both the culture these rich offerings fomented and the asylum's place in the fabric of nineteenth-century life, reanimating a time when the treatment of the insane was a central topic in debates over democracy, freedom, and modernity.Benjamin Reiss explores the creative lives of patients and the cultural demands of their doctors. Without neglecting this troubling contradiction, "Theaters of Madness" prompts us to reflect on what our society can learn from a generation that urgently and creatively tried to solve the problem of mental illness Geschichte 1800-1900 Geschichte 1800-1900 gnd rswk-swf PSYCHOLOGY / Mental Health bisacsh PSYCHOLOGY / Mental Illness bisacsh MEDICAL / Mental Health bisacsh Hospitals, Psychiatric / history / United States Medicine in Literature / United States Cultural Characteristics / United States History, 19th Century / United States Mentally Ill Persons / history / United States Geschichte Gesellschaft Medizin Psychiatric hospitals United States History 19th century Psychiatric hospitals Social aspects United States History 19th century Hospitals in literature History 19th century Mentally ill, Writings of the, American History and criticism Psychisch Kranker (DE-588)4047682-0 gnd rswk-swf Psychiatrische Klinik (DE-588)4138163-4 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf USA USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Psychiatrische Klinik (DE-588)4138163-4 s Psychisch Kranker (DE-588)4047682-0 s Geschichte 1800-1900 z 1\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 0-226-70963-9 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 0-226-70964-7 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-0-226-70963-5 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 978-0-226-70964-2 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=260218 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
