Children today shrug off harsh words by chanting "sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me," but in the seventeenth century people felt differently. "A soft tongue breaketh the bone," they often said. Governing the Tongue explains why the spoken word assumed such importance in the culture of early New England. Author Jane Kamensky re-examines such famous Puritan events as the Salem witch trials and the banishment of Anne Hutchinson to expose the ever-present fear of what the puritans called "sins of the tongue." But even while dangerous or deviant speech was restricted, Kamensky points out, godly speech was continuously praised and promoted. Congregations were told that one should ones voice "like a trumpet" to God and "cry out and cease not." By placing speech at the heart of familiar stories of Puritan New England, Kamensky develops new ideas about the relationship between speech and power both in Puritan New England and, by extension, in our world today |

Congregations were told that one should ones voice "like a trumpet" to God and "cry out and cease not." By placing speech at the heart of familiar stories of Puritan New England, Kamensky develops new ideas about the relationship between speech and power both in Puritan New England and, by extension, in our world today 1500 - 1799 fast Geschichte 1700-1800 Geschichte 1630-1692 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1600-1775 gnd rswk-swf LANGUAGE ARTS & DISCIPLINES / Linguistics / General bisacsh Americanisms fast English language fast English language / Early modern fast English language / Political aspects fast English language / Religious aspects / Christianity fast English language / Spoken English fast Language and culture fast Oral communication fast Christentum Englisch Geschichte Linguistik Politik Religion English language Political aspects New England English language Early modern, 1500-1700 History English language Religious aspects Christianity English language Spoken English New England Language and culture New England History Oral communication New England History English language 18th century History Americanisms New England History Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 gnd rswk-swf Zivilisation (DE-588)4067906-8 gnd rswk-swf Sprache (DE-588)4056449-6 gnd rswk-swf Rede (DE-588)4048882-2 gnd rswk-swf Amerikanisches Englisch (DE-588)4094804-3 gnd rswk-swf Neuengland (DE-588)4075306-2 gnd rswk-swf Neuengland (DE-588)4075306-2 g Sprache (DE-588)4056449-6 s Zivilisation (DE-588)4067906-8 s Geschichte 1600-1775 z 1\p DE-604 Religion (DE-588)4049396-9 s 2\p DE-604 Amerikanisches Englisch (DE-588)4094804-3 s 3\p DE-604 Rede (DE-588)4048882-2 s Geschichte 1630-1692 z 4\p DE-604 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=23622 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
