Beschreibung: | Introduction : Spinoza's Jewish modernities -- Ex-Jew, eternal Jew: early representations of the Jewish Spinoza -- Refining Spinoza : Moses Mendelssohn's response to the Amsterdam heretic -- The first modern Jew : Berthold Auerbach's Spinoza and the beginnings of an image -- A rebel against the past, a revealer of secrets : Salomon Rubin and the east European Maskilic Spinoza -- From the heights of Mount Scopus : Yosef Klausner and the Zionist rehabilitation of Spinoza -- Farewell, Spinoza : I.B. Singer and the tragicomedy of the Jewish Spinozist -- Epilogue : Spinoza Redivivus in the twenty-first century "Pioneering biblical critic, theorist of democracy, and legendary conflater of God and nature, Jewish philosopher Baruch Spinoza (1632-1677) was excommunicated by the Sephardic Jews of Amsterdam in 1656 for his "horrible heresies" and "monstrous deeds." Yet, over the past three centuries, Spinoza's rupture with traditional Jewish beliefs and practices has elevated him to a prominent place in genealogies of Jewish modernity. The First Modern Jew provides a riveting look at how Spinoza went from being one of Judaism's most notorious outcasts to one of its most celebrated, if still highly controversial, cultural icons, and a powerful and protean symbol of the first modern secular Jew. Ranging from Amsterdam to Palestine and back again to Europe, the book chronicles Spinoza's posthumous odyssey from marginalized heretic to hero, the exemplar of a whole host of Jewish identities, including cosmopolitan, nationalist, reformist, and rejectionist. Daniel Schwartz shows that in fashioning Spinoza into "the first modern Jew," generations of Jewish intellectuals -German liberals, East European maskilim, secular Zionists, and Yiddishists- have projected their own dilemmas of identity onto him, reshaping the Amsterdam thinker in their own image. The many afterlives of Spinoza are a kind of looking glass into the struggles of Jewish writers over where to draw the boundaries of Jewishness and whether a secular Jewish identity is indeed possible. Cumulatively, these afterlives offer a kaleidoscopic view of modern Jewish culture and a vivid history of an obsession with Spinoza that continues to this day."--Print version jacket Includes bibliographical references and index |

Schwartz Princeton Princeton University Press ©2012 1 Online-Ressource (270 pages) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Introduction : Spinoza's Jewish modernities -- Ex-Jew, eternal Jew: early representations of the Jewish Spinoza -- Refining Spinoza : Moses Mendelssohn's response to the Amsterdam heretic -- The first modern Jew : Berthold Auerbach's Spinoza and the beginnings of an image -- A rebel against the past, a revealer of secrets : Salomon Rubin and the east European Maskilic Spinoza -- From the heights of Mount Scopus : Yosef Klausner and the Zionist rehabilitation of Spinoza -- Farewell, Spinoza : I.B. Cumulatively, these afterlives offer a kaleidoscopic view of modern Jewish culture and a vivid history of an obsession with Spinoza that continues to this day."--Print version jacket Includes bibliographical references and index Spinoza, Benedictus de / 1632-1677 fast Spinoza, Benedictus de 1632-1677 Influence Spinoza, Benedictus de 1632-1677 (DE-588)118616242 gnd rswk-swf Spinoza, Baruch / Biography Spinoza, Baruch (1632 / 1677) Religion RELIGION / Biblical Criticism & Interpretation / Old Testament bisacsh BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY / Philosophers bisacsh Influence (Literary, artistic, etc.) fast Jewish learning and scholarship fast Jewish philosophy fast Jews / Identity fast Jews / Intellectual life fast Geschichte Juden Jews Identity Jews Intellectual life Jewish learning and scholarship History Jewish philosophy Haskala (DE-588)4159199-9 gnd rswk-swf Zionismus (DE-588)4067864-7 gnd rswk-swf Jüdische Philosophie (DE-588)4136677-3 gnd rswk-swf Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 gnd rswk-swf Spinozismus (DE-588)4128567-0 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)4006804-3 Biografie gnd-content Spinoza, Benedictus de 1632-1677 (DE-588)118616242 p Rezeption (DE-588)4049716-1 s Haskala (DE-588)4159199-9 s Jüdische Philosophie (DE-588)4136677-3 s Zionismus (DE-588)4067864-7 s 1\p DE-604 Spinozismus (DE-588)4128567-0 s 2\p DE-604 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=434950 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
