Is this the way the ancients saw poetry? In Birth of the Symbol, Peter Struck explores the ancient Greek literary critics and theorists who invented the idea of the poetic "symbol." The book notes that Aristotle and his followers did not discuss the use of poetic symbolism. Rather, a different group of Greek thinkers--the allegorists--were the first to develop the notion. Struck extensively revisits the work of the great allegorists, which has been underappreciated. He links their interest in symbolism to the importance of divination and magic in ancient times, and he demonstrates how important symbolism became when they thought about religion and philosophy. "They see the whole of great poetic language as deeply figurative," he writes, "with the potential always, even in the most mundane details, to be freighted with hidden messages."--Publisher's description |

"They see the whole of great poetic language as deeply figurative," he writes, "with the potential always, even in the most mundane details, to be freighted with hidden messages."--Publisher's description Books and reading Classical poetry Poésie ancienne / Histoire et critique Symbolisme dans la littérature Livres et lecture / Grèce Livres et lecture / Rome Rhétorique ancienne Allégorie LITERARY CRITICISM / Ancient & Classical bisacsh Grieks gtt Gedichten gtt Literatuurkritiek gtt Symboliek gtt Allegorieën gtt Griekse oudheid gtt Griechisch Literaturkritik Lyrik Classical poetry History and criticism Symbolism in literature Books and reading Greece Books and reading Rome Rhetoric, Ancient Allegory Symbol (DE-588)4058716-2 gnd rswk-swf Griechisch (DE-588)4113791-7 gnd rswk-swf Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 gnd rswk-swf Symbolik (DE-588)4184194-3 gnd rswk-swf Leser (DE-588)4035441-6 gnd rswk-swf Lektüre (DE-588)4035296-1 gnd rswk-swf Literaturtheorie (DE-588)4036031-3 gnd rswk-swf Allegorie (DE-588)4001236-0 gnd rswk-swf Symbolismus (DE-588)4184198-0 gnd rswk-swf Griechenland (Altertum) Griechenland Rom Griechenland Altertum (DE-588)4093976-5 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4113937-9 Hochschulschrift gnd-content Griechisch (DE-588)4113791-7 s Literatur (DE-588)4035964-5 s Symbolik (DE-588)4184194-3 s Allegorie (DE-588)4001236-0 s 2\p DE-604 Griechenland Altertum (DE-588)4093976-5 g Literaturtheorie (DE-588)4036031-3 s Symbol (DE-588)4058716-2 s Symbolismus (DE-588)4184198-0 s 3\p DE-604 Leser (DE-588)4035441-6 s Lektüre (DE-588)4035296-1 s 4\p DE-604 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=273141 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
