In this ground-breaking book, Heather Rae locates these practices of 'pathological homogenisation' in the processes of state-building. Political elites have repeatedly used available cultural resources to redefine bounded political communities as exclusive moral communities, from which outsiders must be expelled. Showing that these practices predate the age of nationalism, Rae examines cases from both the pre-nationalist and nationalist eras: the expulsion of the Jews from fifteenth-century Spain, the persecution of the Huguenots under Louis XIV and, in the twentieth century, the Armenian genocide and the ethnic cleansing in the former Yugoslavia. She argues that those atrocities have prompted the development of international norms of legitimate state behaviour that increasingly define sovereignty as conditional. Rae concludes by examining two 'threshold' cases - the Czech Republic and Macedonia - to identify the factors that may inhibit pathological homogenisation as a method of state-building."--Jacket |

Rae concludes by examining two 'threshold' cases - the Czech Republic and Macedonia - to identify the factors that may inhibit pathological homogenisation as a method of state-building."--Jacket Geschichte 1915-1916 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Migration forcée / Histoire Nettoyage ethnique / Histoire Génocide / Histoire Atrocités politiques / Histoire POLITICAL SCIENCE / Globalization bisacsh Forced migration fast Genocide fast Political atrocities fast Population transfers fast Staatsvorming gtt Culturele identiteit gtt Uitwijzing gtt Genocide gtt Vervolgingen gtt Relações internacionais larpcal Migração (história) larpcal Genocídio (história) larpcal Atrocités politiques ram Identité collective ram Transferts de population ram Génocide ram Völkermord swd Geschichte 1915-1916 swd Vertreibung swd Geschichte swd Geschichte Globalisierung Forced migration History Population transfers History Genocide History Political atrocities History Vertreibung (DE-588)4063299-4 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 gnd rswk-swf Armenier (DE-588)4085933-2 gnd rswk-swf Völkermord (DE-588)4063690-2 gnd rswk-swf Europa (DE-588)4015701-5 gnd rswk-swf Osmanisches Reich (DE-588)4075720-1 gnd rswk-swf Türkei (DE-588)4061163-2 gnd rswk-swf Osmanisches Reich (DE-588)4075720-1 g Völkermord (DE-588)4063690-2 s Armenier (DE-588)4085933-2 s Geschichte 1915-1916 z 1\p DE-604 Türkei (DE-588)4061163-2 g 2\p DE-604 Europa (DE-588)4015701-5 g Vertreibung (DE-588)4063299-4 s Geschichte z 3\p DE-604 Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 s 4\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 0-521-79284-3 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Paperback 0-521-79708-X Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe, Hardcover 978-0-521-79284-4 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=78334 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
