Britain held North-Western Germany for ten years, overseeing the rehabilitation of 'the biggest single forced population movement in modern history', as Germans from around Europe were expelled from the crumbling Third Reich. This was a humanitarian crisis -- with most hospitals, houses, transport networks and schools destroyed during the war, and the British and Americans running enormous and often inhumane refugee camps. Here, Francis Graham-Dixon assesses how the British squared their ethical focus on liberalism with their status as an occupying power, and examines the economic, military and political pressures of the period through the key turning points of the end of World War II -- the bombing of Hamburg in 1943, the mismanagement of the refugee camp system and the fallout between occupiers and occupied after the Nuremberg trials of 1945/6. The first book to compare German and British sources from the period, this is an essential contribution to the literature on World War II, the Cold War and post-war Europe. -- Provided by publisher Geschichte gnd rswk-swf HISTORY / Europe / Germany bisacsh Reconstruction (1939-1951) Germany Besatzungspolitik (DE-588)4005975-3 gnd rswk-swf Besetzung (DE-588)4006020-2 gnd rswk-swf Entnazifizierung (DE-588)4014891-9 gnd rswk-swf Vertriebener (DE-588)4078868-4 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland Europa Deutschland Gebiet unter Alliierter Besatzung, Britische Zone (DE-588)35100-3 gnd rswk-swf Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4113937-9 Hochschulschrift gnd-content Deutschland Gebiet unter Alliierter Besatzung, Britische Zone (DE-588)35100-3 g Besetzung (DE-588)4006020-2 s Vertriebener (DE-588)4078868-4 s Entnazifizierung (DE-588)4014891-9 s Geschichte z 2\p DE-604 Großbritannien (DE-588)4022153-2 g Besatzungspolitik (DE-588)4005975-3 s 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe Graham-Dixon, Francis, author Allied occupation of Germany http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=656368 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
