505 | 8 | |a "How Race Is Made in America examines Mexican Americans--from 1924, when American law drastically reduced immigration into the United States, to 1965, when many quotas were abolished--to understand how broad themes of race and citizenship are constructed. These years shaped the emergence of what Natalia Molina describes as an immigration regime, which defined the racial categories that continue to influence perceptions in the United States about Mexican Americans, race, and ethnicity. Molina demonstrates that despite the multiplicity of influences that help shape our concept of race, common themes prevail. Examining legal, political, social, and cultural sources related to immigration, she advances the theory that our understanding of race is socially constructed in relational ways--that is, in correspondence to other groups. Molina introduces and explains her central theory, racial scripts, which highlights the ways in which the lives of racialized groups are linked across time and space and thereby affect one another. How Race Is Made in America also shows that these racial scripts are easily adopted and adapted to apply to different racial groups"--Provided by publisher | |

Immigration Regimes I : Mapping Race and Citizenship -- Placing Mexican Immigration within the Larger Landscape of Race Relations in the U.S. -- "What is a White Man?" : The Quest to Make Mexicans Ineligible for U.S. Citizenship -- Birthright Citizenship Beyond Black and White -- Part II. Immigration Regimes II : Making Mexicans Deportable -- Mexicans Suspended in a State of Deportability : Medical Racialization and Immigration Policy in the 1940s -- Deportations in the Urban Landscape -- Epilogue: Making Race in the Twenty-First Century "How Race Is Made in America examines Mexican Americans--from 1924, when American law drastically reduced immigration into the United States, to 1965, when many quotas were abolished--to understand how broad themes of race and citizenship are constructed. How Race Is Made in America also shows that these racial scripts are easily adopted and adapted to apply to different racial groups"--Provided by publisher 1900 - 1999 fast Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1924-1965 gnd rswk-swf SOCIAL SCIENCE / Discrimination & Race Relations bisacsh SOCIAL SCIENCE / Minority Studies bisacsh HISTORY / United States / General bisacsh Citizenship fast Deportation fast Emigration and immigration fast Emigration and immigration / Government policy fast Immigrants fast Mexican Americans / Civil rights fast Mexican Americans / Social conditions fast Race discrimination fast Race relations fast Einwanderer Geschichte Migration Politik Mexican Americans Social conditions 20th century Mexican Americans Civil rights History 20th century Immigrants United States History 20th century Citizenship United States History 20th century Race discrimination United States History 20th century Deportation United States History 20th century Kulturelle Identität (DE-588)4033542-2 gnd rswk-swf Mexikaner (DE-588)4244340-4 gnd rswk-swf Migration (DE-588)4120730-0 gnd rswk-swf Einwanderungspolitik (DE-588)4198721-4 gnd rswk-swf Mexikanischer Einwanderer (DE-588)4439524-3 gnd rswk-swf USA USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Mexiko (DE-588)4039058-5 gnd rswk-swf Mexikaner (DE-588)4244340-4 s Migration (DE-588)4120730-0 s USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Geschichte 1924-1965 z 1\p DE-604 Einwanderungspolitik (DE-588)4198721-4 s Mexikanischer Einwanderer (DE-588)4439524-3 s 2\p DE-604 Kulturelle Identität (DE-588)4033542-2 s Mexiko (DE-588)4039058-5 g 3\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe Molina, Natalia How race is made in America http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=650445 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
