505 | 8 | |a "Jean Guéhenno's Diary of the Dark Years, 1940-1945 is the most oft-quoted piece of testimony on life in occupied France. A sharply observed record of day-to-day life under Nazi rule in Paris and a bitter commentary on literary life in those years, it has also been called "a remarkable essay on courage and cowardice" (Caroline Moorehead, Wall Street Journal). Here, David Ball provides not only the first English-translation of this important historical document, but also the first ever annotated, corrected edition. Guéhenno was a well-known political and cultural critic, left-wing but not communist, and uncompromisingly anti-fascist. Unlike most French writers during the Occupation, he refused to pen a word for a publishing industry under Nazi control. He expressed his intellectual, moral, and emotional resistance in this diary: his shame at the Vichy government's collaboration with Nazi Germany, his contempt for its falsely patriotic reactionary ideology, his outrage at its anti-Semitism and its vilification of the Republic it had abolished, his horror at its increasingly savage repression and his disgust with his fellow intellectuals who kept on blithely writing about art and culture as if the Occupation did not exist - not to mention those who praised their new masters in prose and poetry. Also a teacher of French literature, he constantly observed the young people he taught, sometimes saddened by their conformism but always passionately trying to inspire them with the values of the French cultural tradition he loved. Guéhenno's diary often includes his own reflections on the great texts he is teaching, instilling them with special meaning in the context of the Occupation. Complete with meticulous notes and a biographical index, Ball's edition of Guéhenno's epic diary offers readers a deeper understanding not only of the diarist's cultural allusions, but also of the dramatic, historic events through which he lived"-- | |

spelling | Guéhenno, Jean 1890-1978 Verfasser aut Journal des années noires, 1940-1944 Diary of the dark years, 1940-1944 collaboration, resistance, and daily life in occupied Paris Jean Guéhenno ; translated and annotated by David Ball New York Oxford University Press, USA 2014 1 online resource txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Originally published as Journal des années noires, 1940-1944 by Gallimard (Paris) in 1947, 1973, and 2002 Description based on print version record "Jean Guéhenno's Diary of the Dark Years, 1940-1945 is the most oft-quoted piece of testimony on life in occupied France. Complete with meticulous notes and a biographical index, Ball's edition of Guéhenno's epic diary offers readers a deeper understanding not only of the diarist's cultural allusions, but also of the dramatic, historic events through which he lived"-- Guéhenno, Jean / 1890-1978 fast Guéhenno, Jean 1890-1978 Diaries Guéhenno, Jean 1890-1978 (DE-588)119039354 gnd rswk-swf German Occupation of France (1940-1945) fast World War (1939-1945) fast 1900 - 1999 fast Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1940-1944 gnd rswk-swf HISTORY / Europe / France bisacsh HISTORY / Military / World War II. bisacsh BIOGRAPHY & AUTOBIOGRAPHY / Literary bisacsh LITERARY CRITICISM / European / French bisacsh Authors, French fast Weltkrieg (1939-1945) Authors, French 20th century Diaries World War, 1939-1945 Personal narratives, French Quelle (DE-588)4135952-5 gnd rswk-swf Besetzung (DE-588)4006020-2 gnd rswk-swf Autobiografie (DE-588)4003939-0 gnd rswk-swf Zweiter Weltkrieg (DE-588)4079167-1 gnd rswk-swf Europa Frankreich Paris (DE-588)4044660-8 gnd rswk-swf Frankreich (DE-588)4018145-5 gnd rswk-swf (DE-588)4058900-6 Tagebuch gnd-content Frankreich (DE-588)4018145-5 g Besetzung (DE-588)4006020-2 s Geschichte 1940-1944 z Quelle (DE-588)4135952-5 s 1\p DE-604 Paris (DE-588)4044660-8 g Zweiter Weltkrieg (DE-588)4079167-1 s 2\p DE-604 Guéhenno, Jean 1890-1978 (DE-588)119039354 p Autobiografie (DE-588)4003939-0 s 3\p DE-604 Ball, David 1937- trl Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe Guéhenno, Jean, 1890-1978 Diary of the dark years, 1940-1944 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=777471 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
