505 | 8 | |a "The literature on Gandhi and Martin Luther King is vast, and scholars often speak of the two leaders when discussing theories of non-violence. Yet, no attempt has yet been made to understand the way in which Gandhi and King's socio-political ideas converge in terms of their origins, development and application. In Confluence of Thought, Bidyut Chakrabarty argues that there is a confluence of thought between Gandhi and King's concerns for humanity and advocacy of non-violence, despite their different historical and socio-economic contexts. He says that these two figures are perhaps the best modern historical examples of individuals who combined religion with the political to produce a dynamic social ideology. Gandhi saw service to humanity as the path to 'self-actualization' and thus spiritually most fulfilling; similarly, King pursued religion-driven social action. Chakrabarty looks particularly at the way in which each deployed religious and political language to draw the widest possible membership to their social movements. While Chakrabarty points out that neither thinker was able to fulfill his chosen mission, both suffering death by assassination, he positions the two as the premier modern influences on theories of non-violence today"-- | |

While Chakrabarty points out that neither thinker was able to fulfill his chosen mission, both suffering death by assassination, he positions the two as the premier modern influences on theories of non-violence today"-- Introduction -- The intellectual roots of the confluence of thought -- Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr.: defying liberals, but deifying liberalism -- Articulation of a new ideology: Gandhi's approach to human equality -- Challenging Jim Crow: King's approach to racial discrimination -- Conclusion Gandhi / Mahatma / 1869-1948 King, Martin Luther / Jr / 1929-1968 Gandhi / Mahatma / 1869-1948 fast King, Martin Luther / Jr. / 1929-1968 fast Gandhi Mahatma 1869-1948 Influence Gandhi Mahatma 1869-1948 Political and social views King, Martin Luther Jr. 1929-1968 Influence King, Martin Luther Jr. 1929-1968 Political and social views King, Martin Luther 1929-1968 (DE-588)118562215 gnd rswk-swf Gandhi, Mohandas Karamchand 1869-1948 (DE-588)118639145 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte gnd rswk-swf POLITICAL SCIENCE / History & Theory bisacsh POLITICAL SCIENCE / Political Freedom & Security / Civil Rights bisacsh HISTORY / Asia / India & South Asia bisacsh SOCIAL SCIENCE / General bisacsh Influence (Literary, artistic, etc.) fast Nonviolence fast Political and social views fast Nonviolence Bürgerrechtsbewegung (DE-588)4146878-8 gnd rswk-swf Unabhängigkeitsbewegung (DE-588)4121814-0 gnd rswk-swf Gewaltlosigkeit (DE-588)4020835-7 gnd rswk-swf Asien Gandhi, Mohandas Karamchand 1869-1948 (DE-588)118639145 p King, Martin Luther 1929-1968 (DE-588)118562215 p Unabhängigkeitsbewegung (DE-588)4121814-0 s Bürgerrechtsbewegung (DE-588)4146878-8 s Gewaltlosigkeit (DE-588)4020835-7 s Geschichte z 1\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druck-Ausgabe Chakrabarty, Bidyut, 1958- author Confluence of thought http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=657898 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
