SUMMARY
Milan Grol
In history of Serbian culture, politics and political
thought, the name of Milan Grol (1876-1952) has been
connected to the important institutions of culture - The
National Theatre, The Ilija M. Kolarac Foundation and
PEN-Club, to newspapers and magazines being the leg-
ends among Serbian press and periodicals - Zvezda, Odjek,
Dnevni list, Narod, Demokratija, Srpski književni glasnik
and the others, and to political parties (Independent Rad-
ical Party and Democratic Party) assembling intellectual
elite for the cause of the biggest XX century concepts - the
Yugoslav concept and the concept of democracy. In addi-
tion to numerous reviews, in his lifetime he published the
following three books: Pozorišne kritike ( Rew-
ievs) Belgrade, 1931; Iz predratne Srbije. Utisci i sedanja o
vremenima i ljudima ( Out of Pre-War Serbia. Impressions
and Reminiscences on Times and People); Belgrade, 1939
and Iz pozorišta predratne Srbije ( of Theaters of Pre-War
Serbia) Belgrade, 1952. After his death the other works were
published as well: Londonski dnevnik 1941-1945 (London
Diary 1941-1945), Belgrade, 1990; Iskušenja demokrati-
je ( Temptations of Democracy), Belgrade 1991, and Kroz
dve decenije Jugoslavije (Over two Decades of Yugoslavia),

Belgrade, s.a. He was a brilliant writer, featured by remark-
able and sometimes challenging albeit tremendously rich
style effectuating many undreamed possibilities of Serbian
language. He was able to create unforgettable pictures by a
single sentence or by a single page. He was a friend, a student
and an accomplice of the most outstanding personalities
of his time - Bogdan Popovič, Jovan Skerlič, Milan Rakič,
Ljubomir Stojanovič, Jovan Cvijič, Ljubomir Davidovič,
Milorad Draškovič, Jovan Jovanovič-Pižon, Pavle Popovič,
Slobodan Jovanovič, Isidora Sekulič. Tens of the other in-
tellectuals, artists and politicians had their places in his life.
Having that in mind, this life, albeit sometimes poignant
beyond endurance, must be perceived as a unique and pre-
cious gift. Contemporaries respected more than loved him,
mostly failing to understand complicated intellectual natu-
re of his own, the one that used to inspire and disconcert
by its thoughtfulness and to repulse by too high expectati-
ons from both himself and his surroundings. In addition
to that, his appearance was untypical and unpleasing one,
maladjusted and alien to Serbian environment, witnessing
obscure antagonisms between limited material forms and a
width of mind subjugated within.
In addition to the fact that the works about him are far
from negligible, Milan Grol has not obtained his own biog-
rapher yet. He excited a number of particular portraitists
and they noted their suggestive and stimulating impres-
sions in their desire to reconsider them in order to learn
more about him. A real biographer will be difficult to find,
no matter that insufficient and „scattered“ archives and am-
ple periodicals are just among lesser problems involved. In-
comparably bigger one is the fact that Milan Grol demands

and deserves a historian and a writer of a subtle researcher's
nerve, an exquisite expert in history of ideas and in history
of culture, a master of written word able to satisfy the one
he or she writes about.
Looking forward to seeing a day when such a biography
is written, by the book we are to present to our readers we
have made just a first step - we have assembled, at this place,
the knowledge comprising the most important contents of
Milan Grol's political activities, researching them through
the following four periods marking not only his life but a
destiny of Serbian nation to whose well-being he unselfishly
contributed: tragic years of the Great War (1914-1918), two
decades of the kingdom of Yugoslavia (1919-1941), the peri-
od of World War II (1941-1945) and his short-lived effort to
co-operate with the Communist Party of Yugoslavia (1945).
Regardless of heterogeneity of these times, he remained de-
voted to concepts of both democracy and Yugoslavian un-
ion, defending them in spite of all obstacles, irrespective of
what caused them - non-democratic regimes or the most
difficult historical temptations.
At one and the same time, we have tried to understand
him as a sensitive human being, perceiving that he was often
poorly understood, notwithstanding the enormous creative
work of his own. He was austere and demanding, first of all
towards himself and then towards his social surroundings;
sometimes contradictory, involved in continuous recon-
sideration, at the same time wishing to find his peace of
mind; astonishingly contemplative, literate and eloquent to
the extent that within national emigration there was a ru-
mor about him puzzling, by a torrent of his speech, a Bri-
tish foreign secretary Sir Anthony Eden himself; lonesome

after many deaths had deprived him of his akin. He was
not as charming and noble as Milan Rakič, or featured by
ignitable energy as Jovan Skerlič, but he made up for these
properties that generally generate benevolence and mobilize
masses by his intellectual high-mindedness that impressed
his venerators and irritated his opponents. He wanted to
serve the truth restlessly, considering problems more from
moral than from program aspects. He respected humanity
and ethics, intelligence, self-discipline and self-upbringing,
self-control, as well as mindful utilization of energy anda
sense of personal avocation and duty for everybody's lifeti-
me, strongly believing that everyone was liable to make both
himself and the world he or she was surrounded by better
than the life itself had maybe predestinated. Consistent in
so many aspects, the most faithful he was to his lifetime
belief, seriousness of which he tried to explain to Slobodan
Jovanovič: „If my sincere wish is to make myself look as
good as I can in my own eyes, I do not think shame of this
kind of knighthood 'for the knighthood's sake'. Until I am
impeccable in my very eyes, I cannot believe I am impec-
cable in the eyes of others“. And, in the end: „There is not a
higher power at my hands than a power of my own credo“.
