Globalization is often thought of as an abstract process that happens out there in the world.
But people are ultimately the driving force of global change, and people have bodies that
are absent from current conversations about globalization. The original scholarly research and
first-person accounts of embodiment in this volume explore the role of bodies in the flows of
people, money, commodities, and ideas across borders. From Zumba fitness classes to martial
arts to fashion blogs and the meanings of tattooing, the contributors examine migrating body
practices and ideals that stretch across national boundaries.
Afshan Jafar is Associate Professor of Sociology at Connecticut College, USA Her first book from
Palgrave Macmillan, Women s NCOs in Pakistan (2011), uncovers the overwhelming challenges
facing women s NGOs and examines the strategies they use to ensure not just their survival but
an acceptance of their messages by the larger public.
Erynn Masi de Casanova is Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Cincinnati,
USA. She is the author of Making Up the Difference: Women, Beauty, and Direct Selling in Ecuador
(2011), which won the National Women s Studies Association’s Sara A Whaley Book Prize
