SUMMARY
This book is a joint project by the Geographic Migration Centre (Geomigrace)
research team from the Department of Social Geography and Regional Deve-
lopment of the Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague, and it is
based on research undertaken between 2010 and 2012.
The book looks at issues of international migration, remittances and de-
velopment, focusing primarily on the analysis of financial transactions made
by migrants (start of remittances, links between remittances and earnings
and expenditure, their implicit and relative size, the frequency and forms
of transferral, as well as factors affecting the extent of remittances). Remit-
tance issues are considered in the wider context of the globalizing world
(using for instance the concept of migration transnationalization) as well as
in the socio-economic and geographical reality of both Czechia and Ukraine.
On the micro-level, the analysis of remittances in the book is tied primarily
to research into the life style of Ukrainian migrants (through the concept of
everydayness ) and also to the concept of a time-space geography, with the
mapping of space-time recordings of migrants movements in Prague.
The book has four parts. In the first (by D. Drbohlav), the issues of mi-
gration and development are considered with a special focus on remittances.
It takes a global view, stressing the contemporary situation and discussions
about theoretic-methodological approaches and the introduction of principal
regularities and interdependencies influencing remittances.
The second section includes a brief introduction to Czechia and Ukraine,
particularly Carpathian Ruthenia (Z. Cermak, M. Luptak), and the socio-eco-
nomic, demographic and geographical context of migration that significantly
influences the remittances considered.
The third part comprises contributions based on diverse empirical
research (and analysis) carried out with Ukrainian migrants working in
Czechia. It takes a longitudinal approach using the diary method with
22 Ukrainian respondents from Prague (in two cycles of six months). This
data base is used in three contributions. The first (D. Drbohlav, E. Janska,
Z. Cermak) analyses both cycles of the research carried out using the diaries -
it outlines detailed information on the start of remittances - earnings and
detailed information on expenditures including remittances. It tests the pos-

sibility of using the diary method to research broader issues of international
migration. The related contribution (D. Cermâkovâ, J, Novak, D. Drbohlav)
analyses the nature of everydayness of Ukrainian migrants with a special fo-
cus on their space-time behaviour. It constructs a framework for the analysis
based on the amount of migrants work. The third contribution (E. Janska)
discusses the theme of migration and migrants remittances in a transnation-
al perspective focused on the gender dimension. Two main distinct groups of
Ukrainians who send remittances are identified - families living apart versus
individuals. All these contributions benefit from the fact that the team has
also carried out interviews with family members of respondents-diarists in
Ukraine. Analysis of their accounts has enriched both the knowledge and
contributions themselves (either explicitly through direct quotes, or impli-
citly, by indirect use in interpretation). The second principal data source was
a survey carried out with 321 remitting Ukrainian migrants in Prague and its
surroundings. These data provided the basis for two contributions, in the first
one (D. Drbohlav, D. Dzürovâ) the main characteristics of remittances made
by various respondents are described and then, using regression analysis,
the factors influencing amounts of money sent from Czechia to Ukraine are
identified. In the second contribution (0. Valenta) the assertion of cultural,
qualifying and occupational capacity of Ukrainian migrants in Czechia is an-
alysed. The last section, by the only contributor from outside the Geomigrace
team (Y. Leontiyeva), further enhances the picture of differences between
those Ukrainian migrants in Czechia who send remittances and migrants
who do not. For this she uses regression analysis on data from a countrywide
quantitative research of migrants carried out by the Institute of Sociology of
the Czech Academy of Sciences in 2010, commissioned by the Czech Statisti-
cal Office (1003 respondents in total, including 302 Ukrainian citizens; data
collection via quota selection).
The fourth and final section is dedicated to politics and practice. The situa-
tion and issues of contemporary Czech politics of migration and development
is mapped out here through the use of the semi-structural deep interview
method (R. Stojanov, B. Duzi) (21 respondents - experts from public institu-
tions, academic background, both non-governmental and private sectors).
The second contribution (R. Stojanov) outlines the definition and statistics of
remittances and methodologies of their calculations, both on the level of the
International Monetary Fund and in Czechia, and the author suggests certain
measures to improve the general situation.
The book provides important knowledge about a field which has been
overlooked in Czechia by both administration and research, even though
it directly concerns a high volume of funds, two countries and thousands
of working migrants. Although the authors examine the relatively narrow

theme of financial remittances, the book offers a perspective that analyses
and discusses these questions both in the mirror of well-known theoretical/
conceptual frameworks and in the wider context of global and/or genuinely
Czech-Ukrainian economic, social, demographic and geographical links.
The books concept goes beyond the frame of the narrowly defined Ukraine-
Czechia corridor and looks at many more general horizons. The analysis of
space-time behaviour of foreigners in a city environment is quite unique even
in the international context. The book is also representative of a modern ap-
proach in methodological terms, connecting or combining both quantitative
and qualitative approaches, and it verifies the research findings from mul-
tiple perspectives and sources of information. However, the greatest novelty
is the application of the diary research method to research into international
migration and remittances. For all these reasons, the book is relevant both to
students in various fields and to representatives of the state administration,
local authorities and the non-governmental sector, to all those who are inter-
ested in both theory and practice in various forms of international migratory
processes and the integration of foreigners.
