IDENTITY AND SOVEREIGNTY
This book contains a rather long exposition of the relations
between identity and sovereignty, topics that are relevant not
only in several academic branches but also for the
developments and political practice in modern societies.
Although the elaboration of this relation is mainly treated from
the view point of political science, many other dimensions had
to be taken into account: historical, geo-political, etno-
sociological, economic and development and international
relations dimensions.
Next point of the approach is that it considers the topic as
particularly connected with the current position and
developments in the Balkans, former Yugoslavia and especially
Macedonia and its neighbourhood. Many misunderstangins,
disputes and conflicts in the Balkan region could be explained by
reading or re-reading of tradional or modern doctrines of
nations, nation-building and regional politics.
The prologue of the book is particularly directed to analysis
of the sources serving as a ground of modern politics of Balkan
and other countries. Still in many political platforms of these
countries, traditional approaches, deriving from the 19th
century and earlier (organic, primordial, ethno-romanticist etc.)
prevail, while current concepts the modernist, ethno-symbolist,
international legal approaches etc., are ignored or avoided. This
certainly has an influence and impact on the policies of
regulation of the interstate relations among Balkan and other

countries as well as on policies of recognition of nations,
minorities, churches, cultures etc. It affects very much the
position of Macedonia.
The conclusion of the author is that modern science offers
a good ground on resolving dilemmas of identity and
sovereignty, which is partly included in modern international
law and acts: the right of self-determination and self-
identification. His summary is that all populations or groups of
any population in any state, have the right of self-identification,
if they feel differently from the others or from the majorities.
Then, they do not have the obligation to prove why they do feel
different, either because of historical, economic, lingvistic,
religious or other reasons. Modern states should recognize and
fully respect their right to self-identification.
In the second part of the book, containing several essays,
the author make an analysis of the events connected with the
formation and dispersion of the former Yugoslav federation,
particularly associated with the recognition and the role of
nations and republisc in functioning of thr Federation. He offers
an explanation of the disintegration of socialism and federation
in Yugoslavia, presenting texts published, or prohibited in
former federation on the gradual fermentation of the
counsciousness for identity, sovereignty and national
independence. Most of the texts apply to the position of
Macedonia.
