| adam_text | SUMMARY
The end of the Second World War represented a new hope for citizens of
Czechoslovakia in the sense of their chances for a democratic arrangement
of society. That process was, however, made impossible by certain naivity
and political improvidence of many among them.
The Communists, with the tacit consensus of citizens and of democratic po-
liticians led by President Edvard Benes, were able to gradually occupy all the
important positions of the vital ministries of state and other state institutions.
They quietly prepared the way for the final seizure of power in February 1948.
Many people consider the events of February to be the beginnings of the
future social upheaval. But they were result of the culmination of the efforts
of several preceding years. During that time the Communist Party struggled
for the control of the country and for the political and social alliance of Cze-
choslovakia under the influence of the political east, and above all with the
Soviet Union.
The present monograph features ways that assisted the Czech Communist
in managing the consolidation of the power they had seized. The text deals
at the same time with their attempts at the upkeep of the social and politi-
cal alliance with the Soviet Union. Alongside persecution, culture, cultural
politics and propaganda were used within the process. The political social
situation following the coup in 1948 is discussed in Chapter 1. The topic of
cultural politics and the changes therein brought about the events of the year
1948 follows in Chapter 2. Chapters 3 to 5 deal with propaganda and its Cze-
choslovak peculiarities. Socialist realism is analysed as the official form of
presentations of art and culture in general.
