Beschreibung: | Includes bibliographical references and index In much the same way that Japan has become the focus of contemporary American discussion about industrial restructuring, Germans in the 1920s debated economic reform in terms of Americanism and Fordism, seeing in the United States an intriguing vision for a revitalized economy and a new social order. During the 1920s, Germans were fascinated by American economic success and its quintessential symbols, Henry Ford and his automobile factories. Mary Nolan's book explores the contradictory ways in which trade unionists and industrialists, engineers and politicians, educators and social workers explained American economic success, envisioned a more efficient or "rationalized" economic system for Germany, and anguished over the social and cultural costs of adopting the American version of modernity. These debates about Americanism and Fordism deeply shaped German perceptions of what was economically and socially possible and desirable in terms of technology and work, family and gender relations, consumption and culture.; Nolan examines efforts to transform production and consumption, factories and homes, and argues that economic Americanism was implemented ambivalently and incompletely, producing, in the end, neither prosperity nor political stability. Vision of Modernity will appeal not only to scholars of German History and those interested in European social and working-class history, but also to industrial sociologists and business scholars |

spelling | Nolan, Mary Verfasser aut Visions of modernity American business and the modernization of Germany Mary Nolan New York Oxford University Press 1994 1 Online-Ressource (x, 324 p.) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Includes bibliographical references and index In much the same way that Japan has become the focus of contemporary American discussion about industrial restructuring, Germans in the 1920s debated economic reform in terms of Americanism and Fordism, seeing in the United States an intriguing vision for a revitalized economy and a new social order. Vision of Modernity will appeal not only to scholars of German History and those interested in European social and working-class history, but also to industrial sociologists and business scholars To 1999 fast Geschichte 1900-2000 Geschichte 1918-1933 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1920-1930 gnd rswk-swf POLITICAL SCIENCE / Public Policy / Economic Policy bisacsh BUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Government & Business bisacsh BUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Development / Economic Development bisacsh BUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Development / Business Development bisacsh BUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Structural Adjustment bisacsh BUSINESS & ECONOMICS / Development / General bisacsh Economic policy fast Industrial management fast Industrial relations fast Social policy fast Geschichte Wirtschaft Wirtschaftspolitik Industrial management Germany History 20th century Industrial management United States History 20th century Industrial relations Germany History 20th century Industrial relations United States History 20th century Industrialisierung (DE-588)4026776-3 gnd rswk-swf Innovation (DE-588)4027089-0 gnd rswk-swf Wirtschaftspolitik (DE-588)4066493-4 gnd rswk-swf Arbeitsbedingungen (DE-588)4002641-3 gnd rswk-swf Wirtschaft (DE-588)4066399-1 gnd rswk-swf Modernisierung (DE-588)4120755-5 gnd rswk-swf Arbeitsbeziehungen (DE-588)4002617-6 gnd rswk-swf Fordismus (DE-588)4129214-5 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland USA USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 gnd rswk-swf USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g Wirtschaft (DE-588)4066399-1 s Modernisierung (DE-588)4120755-5 s Deutschland (DE-588)4011882-4 g Geschichte 1918-1933 z 1\p DE-604 Innovation (DE-588)4027089-0 s 2\p DE-604 Wirtschaftspolitik (DE-588)4066493-4 s 3\p DE-604 Arbeitsbedingungen (DE-588)4002641-3 s Geschichte 1920-1930 z 4\p DE-604 Fordismus (DE-588)4129214-5 s 5\p DE-604 Industrialisierung (DE-588)4026776-3 s 6\p DE-604 Arbeitsbeziehungen (DE-588)4002617-6 s 7\p DE-604 http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&scope=site&db=nlebk&db=nlabk&AN=143762 Aggregator Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 7\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
